Video conference: FaceTime now Full HD on iPhones

iPhones can now make FaceTime video calls in 1080p. According to Apple’s recently updated documentation, Full HD video conferencing is possible on the iPhone 8, X, XR, XS, 11, SE (2020) and iPhone 12. With the older models, the resolution seems to be automatically reduced for video chats over the cellular network, only with the iPhone 12 models is Full HD also possible on the move – in 5G networks. However, users have to “allow more data on 5G” instead of using the standard setting.

Full HD FaceTime apparently from iOS 14.2

Apple incorporated the change on the product pages after the release of iOS 14.2, such as MacMagazine noticed. “FaceTime HD (1080p) via WLAN” is now listed there for the iPhone models mentioned, but so far only in the English version of the documents. Such an innovation was not recorded in the release notes of the operating system update. Whether the higher resolution will also be supported for FaceTime video conferences with up to 32 participants remains to be seen for the time being.

For iPads, even with iPadOS 14.2, there is so far no reference to Full HD support, nor is there any reference to Macs. In MacBooks, Apple has integrated 720p cameras right through to the latest models.

Unlike other cross-platform video calling and video conferencing services, FaceTime only works on Apple hardware. When the service was introduced 10 years ago, Apple founder Steve Jobs promised to make the protocol an open standard – and apparently even surprised his own development team with the announcement. To date, however, the service is only available on iPhones, iPads and Macs.

FaceTime for old iPhones and iPads too

The use of FaceTime should still be possible on very old hardware, according to Apple, this goes back to the ten-year-old iPhone 4 – this was how FaceTime was introduced. The iPad 2 (2011) is still supported, but there have been reports of problems with video calls to older hardware in recent months. For video conferences or group calls, newer hardware from iPhone 6s, iPad Air 2 or iPad Pro is required.
