Indonesia volcano erupts (VIDEOS)

Indonesia has almost 130 active volcanoes, more than any other country. Although many show high levels of activity, rash can take weeks or even months.

A volcano in the Indonesian province of Nusa Tenggara erupted on Sunday (29), spreading ash and smoke up to four kilometers high and forcing more than 2,700 residents to seek refuge. The information is from Reuters.

Raditya Jati, a spokesman for the country’s disaster agency, said in a statement that the eruption of the Ile Lewotolok volcano, some 2,600 kilometers east of the Indonesian capital, Jakarta, caused panic among those living nearby.

Some 2,780 people from 26 villages have sought refuge, although no victims have been reported so far, said Jati.

Indonesia’s Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazards Mitigation said on its website that the area close to the volcano is likely to be flooded by “hot clouds, lava flow, lava avalanche and poison gas”.

Kasbani, the head of the center, told Reuters the volcano’s status had been raised to the second highest level in Indonesia’s four-level warning system due to “growing threats”.

There are only three other volcanoes at this level, the agency said. Among them are the Merapi volcano on the island of Java and Sinabung in Sumatra, which erupted this month.
