Depression Clement is about to hit Madeira very hard!

This high risk meteorological situation for the Autonomous Region of Madeira has been anticipated for many days. The rapid evolution of an Atlantic depression system, located southwest of mainland Portugal and now located north of the island of Madeira, gave rise to the Clement depression, an adverse meteorological phenomenon named yesterday afternoon by IPMA (Portuguese Institute of the Sea and the Atmosphere).

This is the third depression officially appointed to the 2020/2021 season which appears in the official storm table of the national meteorological services in southwestern Europe.

In just over 2 weeks, the formation and development of the second powerful Atlantic storm to appear next to the Autonomous Region of Madeira takes place. One of the most evident differences recorded between the subtropical cyclone Theta and the Clement depression is that, this time, the Madeira archipelago will be right in the middle of the storm.

Lots of rain and strong southwest wind

Some lines of instability associated with this Atlantic depression have already been affecting mainland Portugal throughout Saturday, but the core of this storm will focus mainly on the Madeira archipelago. The southwest winds will blow with enormous strength, gusts greater than 100 km / h in some locations on the island of Madeira, such as Calheta, Ribeira Brava, Funchal and São Vicente. In some moments, they may occasionally reach the 115 km / h.

The entire island will be under the influence of this powerful low pressure system. Very cloudy skies and rain, in general, are expected to fall in a weak to moderate regime. On the 1st of December precipitation may start to fall in a strong regime. Also formed are the favorable conditions for thunderstorms. The most critical day of the Clement depression will be tomorrow, November 30.

Risks and dangers associated with the passage of Clement

The potential effects of this Atlantic storm, which has left a lot of instability in the Azorean islands in the last hours, are the occurrence of floods and rapid floods, the fall of infrastructure, the felling of trees and possible material or personal damage and landslides.
