A new study shows that eating just one egg a day increases the risk of developing type 2 diabetes by 60 percent, according to the British newspaper, Daily Mail.
Australian researchers who studied a sample of 8,545 Chinese adults found a positive association between increased egg consumption and higher blood sugar levels.
Eggs are versatile, nutritious and promoted as “healthy fast food” in the UK, but have proven to be the ultimate puzzle for diabetes researchers.
Previous studies indicated that eating eggs can prevent diabetes.
This new research suggests that regular consumption of an egg a day, whether boiled or fried, makes you more vulnerable to the condition that occurs when your blood sugar is too high.
“Diet is a known and modifiable factor that contributes to the emergence of type 2 diabetes, so understanding the range of dietary factors that may affect the increasing prevalence of the disease is important,” said study author Dr. Ming Lee at the University of South Australia.
While the relationship between egg intake and diabetes is often a subject of debate, this study aims to assess long-term egg consumption and diabetes risk.
The study focused particularly on people in China, who had gone through a transition phase away from the traditional diet that included grains and vegetables, to a more processed diet that included greater amounts of meat, snacks and eggs, according to Dr. Li.
And from 1991 to 2009, the number of people eating eggs in China nearly doubled, from 16 grams in 1991-93, to 26 grams in 2000-2004 and 31 grams in 2009.
Diabetes was responsible for at least $ 760 billion in health expenditures in 2019 – 10 percent of the global total spent on healthcare.
In China, the costs associated with diabetes have exceeded $ 109 billion.
For the study, Dr Li and her team analyzed data from 8,545 adults who attended the China Health and Nutrition Survey from 1991 to 2009.
The China Health and Nutrition Survey is an ongoing survey supported by the US government’s Centers for Disease Control and Prevention that aims to study the effects of health and nutrition policies in China.
The participants’ egg consumption habits were recorded, while the diabetes was diagnosed based on a blood sugar test in 2009.
The team found that long-term consumption of eggs, more than 38 grams per day, increased the risk of developing diabetes among Chinese adults by about 25 percent.
But adults who ate more than 50 grams, or the equivalent of one egg a day, had a 60 percent increased risk of developing diabetes.
The association was also more pronounced in women than in men, indicating that women are more likely to develop diabetes if they eat eggs regularly.
Lee said that more research is needed to explore causal relationships, that is, whether they can prove that eating eggs is the cause of diabetes.
“To beat diabetes, a multifaceted approach is needed that includes not only research, but also a clear set of guidelines to help inform and guide the public … This study is one step towards this long-term goal,” she added.
