An image posted on Facebook states that William Barr, Attorney General of the North American country, denounced that “there was an electoral fraud.” The publication has been shared more than 1,000 times in the last day.

However, this information is false. Although it is true that, last September, Barr pointed out that it was possible that fraud was committed through the electoral method by mail, has not denounced that the result of the November elections is illegitimate.

William Barr has not reported fraud following the results of the US elections.

It is false that William Barr “just reported” fraud. The publication presents the news as if it had happened in the present. However, after a Verifier review, to date, the attorney general of the United States has not publicly commented on the results of the electoral process, in which Republican Donald Trump was defeated by Joe Biden.

The statement comes from an interview that Barr gave to CNN on September 2, 2020. On that occasion, the current director of the US Department of Justice affirmed that the model of votes by mail would be susceptible to fraud and that people would be “playing with fire” by using this system.

On the one hand, it is denied that William Barr has denounced that “there was electoral fraud”, as if it were a current statement. However, it is also not accurate to say that postal ballots are conducive to substantial fraud, as the attorney general argues.

According to CNN fact-checking, vote-by-mail fraud is “extremely rare.” “Jurisdictions that have long held elections primarily for mail (…) they have done so without significant incidents, ”said the news portal.

Likewise, following Barr’s statements, The New York Times indicated that, according to experts, “electoral fraud is rare, although a little more common among votes by mail, but any effort large enough to change the result of a choice would probably be detected ”.

During the 2020 electoral race, as well as after the elections of November 3, Donald Trump has tried to undermine the validity of the elections, alleging fraud due to votes by mail.
