Bad weather in Karabakh: the total war against the Armenian people...

Nagorno-Karabakh has been under assault from Azerbaijan and NATO member since 27 September. The relative technical superiority of the aggressors, the global pandemic, the European situation and the circumstance of the agenda and elections in the United States contribute to the deliberately chosen opportunity.

It will not be just resentment, aversion or hatred. It is the premeditated ending of the inveterate Ottoman idiosyncrasy. Between 1915 and 1923, Turkey unpunished, in Eastern Anatolia, the first genocide of the 20th century. The Armenian genocide was committed in the apparent confusion of the First World War against peaceful and enterprising communities, modestly Westerners in the complicated East, worshipers of everything that from afar or near could be European and Francophile until delirium or caricature. Creative people used to be beheaded periodically. And, again, now, before the criminal impunity of apathy and forgetfulness of all.

The Nagorno-Karabakh war designates the conflict that occurred between 1989 and 1994, in reality never ending, in this almost exclusively Armenian settlement enclave. At the time, Azerbaijan tried unsuccessfully to halt the process of self-determination in those lands, having started an attempt at ethnic purification, similar to what happened at the same time in the fragmented ex-Yugoslavia. The enclave parliament, in a reflexive conservation instinct, voted for unification with the Republic of Armenia. And the inhabitants, through demonstrably democratic elections, voted, by an overwhelming majority, for this measure.

This small group of hardworking people, who chose democracy, is forced to take up arms so as not to die, surviving under bombs in the wake of a humanitarian disaster. There is a lack of medicines, electricity, supplies, precisely in these pandemic times. The Azerbaijan dictatorship, where son succeeds father and whose vice presidency is granted to his wife for life, and the authoritarian government of Turkey, where President Erdogan is growing, in the face of European bewilderment, in appeals to nationalism as a way to appease the less popularity and the social crisis, act with the greatest disrespect for human life. Not only for the formerly “inferior race of Armenians”, but also for the citizens of the respective aggressive ethnicities.

Right now, the great-grandchildren of the survivors of the first genocide of the 20th century seek, first of all, to protect their own children from criminal catastrophes. However, more than the notion of a regional or religious problem, it is necessary to be aware that these Armenians fall for freedoms and their values that are inviolable, anywhere in the world. The very ideas of freedom, equality and fraternity are inscribed in the Constitution and in the daily reality of life on the streets of the Armenian Republic and the Republic of Nagorno-Karabakh. It is by no means the case for either Azerbaijan or Turkey.

Those who, in general indifference, die today, are killed by the same knives that beheaded a modest teacher in France. This brave teacher was teaching, raising fundamental values. Our brothers and sons, far away in the Caucasus and so close, fall because of humanity under the perverse impunity with which the murderers act in the middle of the crowd, who walk arm in arm in the streets of Paris, Berlin, London, Lisbon .
