Tony Holohan, Hief Medical Officer, has called for wider use of face masks instead of visors, particularly in retail environments, to limit the spread of Covid-19.

He said visors don’t offer the same level of protection as face masks.

Another five Covid-19-related deaths were confirmed by the Health Protection Surveillance Center tonight.

It was also confirmed that there were an additional 335 cases of the virus. That means 3,335 cases have been confirmed in the past week, an average of 476 new outbreaks per day. There were also 33 Covid-19-related deaths in the past week.

Dr. Holohan praised efforts to contain the spread of the virus but cautioned against complacency.

“The commitment to the spirit of public health advice shown by people across Ireland since the Covid-19 pandemic broke out is to be commended. This includes wearing a face mask, which is difficult to social distancing in shops and public transit. ”

He said it was also important that people wore face masks properly.

“Make sure that you completely cover your mouth and nose with the face mask. Remember that visors don’t offer the same benefits as face masks.

“I would particularly like to emphasize that it is very important that those who work in environments such as retail avoid the use of visors and use face masks instead. Face masks offer far better protection and should be worn by anyone who can wear them. Wearing one will prevent someone who doesn’t know they have Covid-19 from passing it on to another person.

“You are a key part of our defense against this virus, in addition to staying home and avoiding meeting people outside of your household.”

The numbers released tonight confirmed that 284 patients with Covid-19 were in the hospital. Almost 10 percent of them (23) were hospitalized in the last 24 hours, the Ministry of Health said.

40 of those in the hospital are being treated in intensive care units.

Dublin continues to have the highest number of new cases at 72. Donegal has seen 41 new cases. There were 26 in Mayo. Cork and Kerry have reported 25 and 23 cases, respectively.

Donegal has the highest infection rate in the country. The 14-day incidence rate there 291.5 infections per 100,000 people. The national average is 185.6 per 100,000.
