Latvia will launch a four-week lockdown on Monday, a government spokesman told CNN after the number of new coronavirus cases rose sharply in recent weeks.

According to the spokesman, Latvia reported 357 new cases on Friday, bringing the total to 7,476 infections. The country has recorded 95 deaths since the pandemic began.

The vast majority of the country’s cases were recorded last month. As of October 1, Latvia had only registered 1,945 cases.

Social contacts are not recommended from Monday. Only indoor gatherings with a maximum of 10 people from no more than two households are permitted. Restaurants are only allowed to serve take-away, and shops also limit the number of people in the restaurant.

Other restrictions include continuous distance learning for high school students, as well as professional, vocational and higher education institutions, while lower grades remain open. Only stores selling basic groceries such as groceries, medicines, and pet food are allowed to remain open on weekends and holidays.

All public events, including concerts and theatrical performances, are prohibited. Museums, libraries and bookshops remain open under strict security measures.
