An amateur wildlife photographer has captured an eel attempt to escape from the bird that ate it alive.

Sam Davis, 58, from Maryland, USA, captured the incredible moment on camera. His pictures show the eel bursting from the stomach of the gray heron that scooped it up.

The snake eel has a hard tip for digging in the soft sand on the ocean floor, where it spends most of its time.

This eel came up with the idea to use this hard tip to break free from the bird’s stomach instead. Unfortunately, the photos show that the snake eel did not survive and did not complete its escape.

Mr. Davis said he went to the reserve to photograph foxes, eagles, “and whatever else may be interesting.”

He watched two eagles and a fox follow the heron and thought they might be preparing for a strike.

But it wasn’t until he got home that he realized what he was really seeing.

“At first I thought the heron had been bitten in the neck by a snake or an eel.

“When I got home and edited the photos, I could see that it was an eel coming through its neck. I could see his eyes and he was still alive, ”said Mr. Davis.

“The reserve said they had never seen anything like it. It’s kind of a sick photo. ”

Martin Fowlie, an expert with the RSPB, told MailOnline that snake eels have been recorded trying to dig out of fish before “to escape consumption”.

“But I’ve never seen pictures like this before involving a bird,” he said.

“I’m surprised the heron still flies with a sizeable hole. I would imagine the bird would not survive such an injury. ”
