Russia is looking for an actress to work for one on...

Russia’s largest television station has launched a competition to find a woman to appear in what will hopefully be the first feature film in space.

In cooperation with the Russian space agency Roscosmos, Channel One is looking for a leading actress for the film with the provisional title “Challenge”, which will be shot on the International Space Station (ISS) from October 2021.

And the project competes for it in a space race for the 21st century Pip film star Tom Cruise on the post after he announced he would team up with him NASA and Elon Musk‘s SpaceX to film the first narrative feature outside of Earth’s atmosphere around the same time.

The casting announcement for the role says that the role requires a “real superhero,” someone who “wants to go to the stars … and become a big international star at the same time.”

While the successful applicant does not have to be a professional actress, she must be between 25 and 40 years old, between 150 and 180 cm tall, weigh between 50 and 70 kg and have a “chest size” of up to 112 cm.

She must also have a clean criminal record.

She also needs to be quite fit, running 1km in three and a half minutes or less, swimming 800m freestyle in 20 minutes, and diving from a three-meter springboard with impressive technique.

Maybe just not surprising Russian Citizens are taken into account.

As part of the first screening, each applicant must also send a screen test in which they read Tatyana’s famous letter from the Russian poet Alexander Pushkin to Eugene Onegin in his 1833 novel.

After the personal casting, a shortlist of 30 candidates is created and then narrowed down to two using a series of physical, medical and psychological tests.

Two women are ultimately trained as “cosmonaut researchers” – one for the main role and the other as a second cast / stunt double.

It is understood that a male supporting actor will also be selected and sent into space, but in a separate process for public female casting.

The general director of Roscosmos Dmitry Rogozin described the project as “a kind of space experiment” and said the winners were prepared for any situation that “could unexpectedly arise on board the station”.

You will learn basic space, spacecraft and the ISS for three months at the Cosmonaut School. Three more months of practice will follow.

They are drilled in weightless flights with vestibular training and a centrifuge as well as survival training with the possibility of an “abnormal spray landing”.

The applicant was also warned that he must be prepared to sleep in an ISS sleeping bag and wash his hair with just a few drops of water, shampoo and a towel.

The astronaut and MP of the Federal Assembly of Russia Elena Serova said: “If the applicant is married, there is little time for a family and the environment is, believe me, quite demanding.”

It takes about six years to train a professional astronaut for space, although all of the preparation for the film will be done in less than a year.

During the flight into space, astronauts travel at a speed of around 27,000 km / h and circle the earth 16 times a day on the ISS.

While details of the plot are yet to be released, Channel One CEO Konstantin Ernst said the script is currently being written with the help of Roscosmos to bring it to life.

He said, “This is not science fiction, this is a very realistic version of what could happen in the near future.”

The filming in space takes 10 days. In addition to time on set, actors are required to exercise two hours a day with barbells, a squat, or a treadmill.

Russian film also competes against other competitors when it comes to filming in space Tom Cruise‘s as yet unnamed $ 200 million (£ 150 million) Universal Studios project, an American reality television series is also in the works.

With a similar selection process and training plan, Space Hero Inc plans to send a civilian to the ISS in 2023 and broadcast it live worldwide. It is said to be the greatest award ever given on American television.

The International Space Station is a $ 100 billion (£ 80 billion) science and technology laboratory located 400 km above the Earth.

As a multinational joint project, it is home to five participating space agencies, including Roscosmos and NASA.
