Tunisia … Residential neighborhoods above the law

Two Tunisian officials at the Tunisian Electricity and Gas Company revealed that there are residential neighborhoods in Tunisia “above the law” that are difficult for the company’s agents to enter in order to cut off electricity to those who are reluctant to pay bills.

The Central Director of Electricity and Gas Distribution “Stag”, Abdel-Rahim Tohmallah, and the director in charge of directing extraction and reducing energy losses, Moncef Al-Mohabli, stated in a statement to the official news agency that there are residential neighborhoods that are difficult for the company’s employees to enter to do their work.

They noted that the Tunisian Electricity and Gas Company has internal classifications for places where it is difficult to work.

They pointed out that 3 or 4 revivals have been counted, classified as a black point in every region belonging to the company (42 regions), which are difficult to enter.

He explained that the agents of the “Stag” are daily exposed to many threats and physical and verbal violence in those areas, stressing that some agents have been detained because of their work towards refraining from salvation of what they are responsible for.

Abd al-Rahim Toamallah stated that the number of assaults on the company’s employees has reached 27 cases since the beginning of the year 2020, compared to 82 cases in 2019, and the total number of assaults from 2011 until today has reached 572 cases.

The Tunisian official stated that a working session was organized with the Ministry of Interior in 2016, during which it expressed its willingness to insure workers while performing their duties.
