Outrage in France over supermarket that sells whole animals on trays

Paris.- A wave of outrage from animal rights groups on social networks has forced the chain of Lecrerc supermarkets to withdraw from sale in one of its stores in the south of France hares, pheasants and other animals, which were sold directly wrapped in plastic trays.

The controversy began last Friday when a woman shared photos of the animals in a Lecrerc hypermarket on her Twitter account on the outskirts of Avignon, southeast France.

In them the dead animals were seen, whole and with hair, packaged and prepared for direct sale to the public.

After this, many users joined the complaint on social networks as well as several environmental and animal groups, so the distributor finally withdrew the products from sale and apologized to those who felt affected.

“Although it is shocking at first, it is a less hypocritical way of presenting meat, which is nothing more than a dead animal,” said Brigitte Bardot Foundation spokesperson Cristophe Marie.

This organization has been one of the main institutions to pronounce on the subject. Since its creation in 1986 in Saint Tropez it operates both in France as in the rest of the world for the protection and awareness of animal rights.

“It is interesting to see that consumers are increasingly aware that animals are killed for consumption, the reaction is even worse when it comes to animals such as rabbits, which can also become pets,” said the spokesperson.

While some showed their outrage at the sale of these animals, others like Marie see this as an effective way to raise awareness among consumers.

“This could have been an awareness-raising action by activists to show that meat is, above all else, a killed animal,” the activist wrote on Twitter along with the photo of the trays.

The collective Mr. Mondialisation also reacted on Facebook and pointed out that “despite the fact that one might think that they were local hunters who exceeded their hunting,” the labels read that they came from Belgium. “Plastic, a thousand kilometers by truck.
