A teacher from Emmaus College in the Oosterflank district of Rotterdam has been threatened in connection with a cartoon that hung in one of the classrooms. The police reported this after reporting by the AD and RTV Rijnmond. Security measures have since been taken.
According to the Rotterdam police, the threats have been made online. “The police and the Public Prosecution Service take the threats very seriously. It is currently being investigated who is behind the threats. ”
Nothing can be said about the nature and extent of the security measures. “We are in close contact with the school and take visible (extra surveillance) and invisible measures to ensure that the threats stop,” said the police.
In a letter to the parents, the school management explained the situation on Tuesday, a day after the school, together with the students, reflected on the murder of the French teacher Samuel Paty. “Unfortunately, there has been a fuss about a cartoon (winner of the Inktspotprijs 2015) that hung in a room,” the letter said.
According to the school management, some students took offense at this, took a photo and shared it on social media, which subsequently went viral. There was a fierce response to this on social media. The cartoon is by cartoonist Joep Bertrams and is about the attack on Charlie Hebdo.
Out of context
Among other things, the management of the school writes: “In the photo, the context in which the cartoon hangs has completely disappeared. As a result, threats have been made towards colleagues. We find these threats unacceptable. ”
In the letter, the Emmaus College indicated that it was shocked by the commotion and that it was discussing this with the police and the School & Safety Foundation. “We do everything we can to keep our school a safe place for everyone, so that the students can go to school in peace and quiet,” said the school management.
