Dubai Economy recently held a workshop on the health care sector, with the aim of highlighting the unique opportunities available to the public and private sectors, to cooperate and participate in shaping the features of a smart and sustainable health care sector in the Emirate of Dubai, especially in the wake of the global outbreak of Covid 19.
The workshop comes as part of a series of “Future Economy Lab” workshops launched by Dubai Economy as a strategic initiative to communicate with the private sector, regulatory authorities and academia, and to explore future economic opportunities. The workshop discussed how Dubai can accelerate the local growth of supply chains in the healthcare sector, and promote the digital transformation of healthcare services.
Among the most prominent solutions and opportunities that have been proposed are increasing investment in medical research and development, imposing an ethical framework, hybrid healthcare. There is a growing need to develop robust frameworks, regulations and policies in digital health and public-private partnership models.
Another opportunity for growth is healthcare manufacturing, with about 80% of pharmaceutical or medicinal products being imported in Dubai and the rest of the Middle East region. In the long term, Dubai could diversify further into new areas by establishing local research and development centers and drug manufacturing.
