Italy

Italy recorded 22,253 new contagions of covid-19 and 233 deaths in the last 24 hours, announced the Italian authorities, who are expected to confirm new restrictions to combat the pandemic today.

The reduction in new positive cases has been normal on Mondays, since fewer tests are carried out on Sunday – in the last 24 hours, 235,000 tests have been carried out, against 183,000 on Saturday.

In total, since the beginning of the pandemic in mid-February, Italy has registered 731,588 cases of contamination with the new coronavirus, with 39,059 deaths.

Hospital pressure in the country continues to increase, and of the current 296,512 patients, 21,862 are hospitalized (1,021 more than Sunday) and 2,022 are hospitalized in intensive care units (83 more).

With these figures, the Prime Minister of Italy, Giuseppe Conte, indicated today that he will impose the curfew at the national level as of 10:00 pm, already in force in some communities, or as of midnight, in others.

Temporarily, on weekends, museums, recreational rooms and shopping centers will also be closed.

The decree, which is expected to be approved on Wednesday, will define three areas of risk and will apply more or less severe restrictions in a given region according to epidemiological data.

In this sense, the most severe restrictions are expected to fall on some of the cities currently most affected by the pandemic, such as Milan, Turin and Genoa.

The Italian virologist Andrea Crisanti, known for having managed to stop the spread of the new coronavirus in the Veneto region in the first wave of the pandemic, defended today that the closure in the areas of greatest contagion “is important” because it will help to reduce the transmission of covid- 19.

In a conversation with representatives of the foreign press in Italy, Crisanti admitted that one could arrive at Christmas with “a low level of contacts”, although he stressed that, without an active surveillance system and without solutions to consolidate it, the numbers could return to increase.

“Now, containment measures are the most important thing to stop the spread and consolidate it. Then, a new general confinement of three to six weeks should be defined to be able to lower the new cases. No surveillance system can work with a very large number of contagions ”, he defended.

United Kingdom

The UK has recorded 136 deaths from covid-19 in the last 24 hours and 18,950 new infections, the British Ministry of Health announced today, as Britain is preparing to enter confinement.

As of Sunday, 162 deaths and 23,254 new cases had been reported, but weekend numbers are often lower due to the delay in processing the data.

In the past seven days, the number of deaths has increased by 46% and the number of infections has increased by 4% compared to the previous seven days.

The cumulative total since the beginning of the covid-19 pandemic in the UK is now 1,053,864 confirmed infections and 46,853 deaths recorded within 28 days after the victims received a positive test.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson today presented deputies with a proposal for four weeks’ confinement in England, from Thursday to December 2.

“Models produced by our scientists suggest that, unless we act now, in the winter we will be able to register twice as many deaths as in the first wave. Given these more recent figures, there is no alternative but to take more measures at the national level,” he warned.

According to the government’s confinement proposal, most businesses will be closed, with bars and restaurants restricted to outside sales, but schools and universities will remain open.

People will be forced to stay at home, except for work, exercise and essential shopping.

Due to the system of decentralized governments, confinement applies only in England, but the autonomous governments of Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales have also imposed strict restrictions.

Wales and Northern Ireland are in confinement until 9 and 13 November, respectively, while Scotland is evaluating this hypothesis, despite having introduced a system of five levels of restrictions today.
