Subway car was on its way down a cliff in Rotterdam...

The incident happened on Monday morning at the terminus of the subway line in Speijkenisse, south of the city of Rotterdam.

The subway tracks are located on a raised bridge, which stops right next to a neighborhood. Instead of stopping at the terminus, the carriage drove past the barricades and ended up off the bridge.

It was on its way down outside, but at the last minute the disaster was averted by a huge work of art.

Pictures from the site show the carriage balancing on the sculpture of the tail fin on a whale. It will probably be there for a while.

– We are now trying to find out how we can get the train down in a careful and controlled way, says a spokesman for local authorities to the TV station NOS, according to Dutchnews.nl.

The public transport company says that the driver came unharmed from the somewhat special incident. There were also no passengers on board. The driver managed to get off the train on his own.

– The Finn saved the driver’s life

The incident happened just after midnight Monday night and led to several people in nearby houses waking up to the noise.

– The sound lasted for two to three seconds. I eventually realized that something was wrong. I thought; something very strange is happening here, says a witness.

Kilian Lindenburg filmed the incident. There is visible damage to the train and electrical wires dangling down from the carriage.

“A work of art prevented the train from falling and saved the driver’s life,” Lindenburg told Storyful, according to Yahoo News.
