ABB secures large order from Korean Daewoo

The industrial conglomerate ABB has won a contract from the shipbuilding division of the Korean group Daewoo for the delivery of a propulsion system for six new ships intended to transport liquefied natural gas (LNG).

In a statement released on Monday, the Zurich electro-technical group figures the order at more than $ 300 million, or around 275 million francs at the current price. The first deliveries are scheduled for 2023.

Each of Daewoo’s new ships will be equipped with three ‘Azipod’ propulsion units developing a cumulative power of 51 megawatts, or the equivalent of 68,400 horsepower (HP), making it possible to navigate in waters covered with more than 2 ice meters without the support of an icebreaker.

The same technology was used to equip 15 other LNG vessels in 2019. ‘We are proud that our technology has been chosen again for difficult activities in the Arctic’, said Juha Koskela, Director of the Marine & Division. ABB ports, cited in press release.

ABB prides itself on having already equipped more than 90 icebreakers or similar vessels with its electric propulsion systems, which reduce consumption by 20% compared to traditional systems. The power of the ‘Azipod’ units offered by ABB ranges between 1 and 22 MW.
