A Vietnam Airlines plane, which was flying from Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City, was delayed for an hour on Monday, after a passenger was found “having fun” by setting fire to toilet paper.
The Vietnamese newspaper “VN Express” reported that the plane was scheduled to take off at eight in the morning local time, but as the plane was heading to the runway in preparation for take off, one of the flight attendants found a man – whose identity has not been revealed – using a lighter to light the toilet paper .
In a statement, Vietnam Airlines said that upon discovering the man, he quickly extinguished the fire, without causing the plane to any damage.
The pilot informed the control tower of the incident, and decided to return the plane. The flight crew delivered the passenger to security officials at the airport, and then the plane took off at nine in the morning, an hour later than its original schedule.
Tran Huai Phong, director of the Northern Airports Authority, said the type of lighter that a passenger carries is not prohibited on board aircraft, but that its use on board the plane poses a safety threat.
