The Cuban Telecommunications Company, ETECSA, authorized the payment of recharges and other services through the Libremente Convertible Currency (MLC) card for a promotion that began last Monday and will end on Saturday.
Although there has been no official information from the entity, several users have announced it on social networks.
“In the MLC stores of ETECSA, users with the MLC card can take advantage of the promotional offers of the Mobile Recharge during the promotion date of the 20 USD Recharges”, revealed on his Facebook wall Héctor Labadí Hierrezuelo, director of the Young Computer Club in Santiago de Cuba.
Yunior González Blanco also announced it on Twitter.
“ETECSA is already putting international recharges in MLC from the Nautico branch … 20 MLC …”, he tweeted.
So far, the inclusion of payment with hard currency within the country is valid only for this week’s offer, which allows to earn 1GB plus 40 CUC to anyone who recharges from 20 to 50 dollars with the MLC card.
This type of company recharges have always been only from abroad. The company’s clients in Cuba had to wait for a relative or friend abroad to deposit money into their account. Now they can do it in the country, at least in some offices, paying with the MLC card.
A user photographed the promotion in an ETECSA office in Havana and posted it on his Facebook account.
“Let it not be said that there is no recharge … Cuban has fun,” said Miguel Abad.
ETECSA has also started billing the MLC payment for other services such as the Nauta Hogar account, according to the company’s Mayabeque branch.
“If you have a magnetic card associated with a bank account (in national currency or in MLC), you can not only recharge your Nauta account, but also pay the Nauta Hogar monthly fee through Transfermóvil. For this you need the latest version of the apk (1.200730) ”, he detailed on his Facebook wall.
Last week ETECSA started selling cell phones in MLC in two commercial offices in Havana: in the one of the Nautical distribution, of the Playa municipality, and in the one located in 17 and A, in Vedado.
The Cuban communications monopoly is offering an Alcatel 5033M for $ 65 and an Alcatel1 5024A for $ 165, both with a three-month warranty.
Several Cubans on the Internet criticized the company’s decision.
“The abuse and impudence of Cuban misrule does not stop. ETECSA has started selling its Alcatel wastes at MLC. Taking advantage of not having competition and high demand, it changes its rates to USD. How long will they trample us? What is left for the people in Cuba ”, said a Cuban with indignation.
With these offers, ETECSA joins the establishments that sell their products in dollars, such as electrical appliance stores and food and toilet stores.
They can only be accessed by a small part of the population, amid a serious shortage of shops and a prolonged shortage of basic necessities.
The new version of the Cuban application for online payments Transfermóvil will also allow you to request the cards at MLC at Banco Metropolitano.
