LONDON (Reuters) – New COVID-19 cases in England increased by around 51,900 daily last week, up nearly 50% from the previous week. This was found in an official poll on Friday, which indicated that the incidence of new infections was still rising sharply and hadn’t leveled off.

The ONS Infection Survey estimate rose from an estimated 35,200 new daily cases the week before, when the ONS said there were signs of flattening in new infections.

“The latest modeled estimate shows that the number of infections in England continues to increase sharply,” said the Office for National Statistics (ONS).

According to the ONS, 568,100 people had COVID-19 infections between October 17 and 23, up from 433,300 the week before.

This equates to 1 in 100 people who have had COVID-19 based on a modeled estimate of community prevalence derived from population samples.

The ONS tries to estimate the number of infections in the community beyond those tested and gives an estimate of the prevalence that is not influenced by the testing capacity.
