nne O’Sullivan, 60, was supported by relatives, one of whom had an arm gently around her shoulder as she went to St. Mary’s Church in Castlemagner for her husband Tadg O’Sullivan’s, 59, requiem mass, her youngest Son, Diarmuid (23).
Tadg and his two sons Mark O’Sullivan, 25 and Diarmuid O’Sullivan, 23, died early Monday morning in a triple shootout outside of Kanturk, Co Cork, after an escalating argument over a family’s will and 115 acre farm inheritance around 2 Million €.
Tadg and Diarmuid are said to have confronted and shot Mark in his bedroom last Monday morning before apparently suing themselves in a field 600 meters away.
Anne, mother of two and a nurse struggling with serious health problems, mourned the heartbreaking loss of her entire family.
Dressed all in black, Anne arrived at St. Mary’s with family and close friends.
The mourners were told that the tragedy had cast a black cloud of mourning over an entire peasant community like the darkest hour of creation.
The first of two separate funerals took place today – with Tadg and his younger son Diarmuid having their Requiem Mass at St. Mary’s Church in Castlemagner.
Mark’s Requiem Mass will be celebrated separately in Kanturk on Saturday.
The Kanturker pastor Canon Toby Bluitt told the mourners that both Tadg and Diarmuid touched the lives of many local people.
“You have all changed your life and death and you will never be the same again. Therefore, today, gathered in our grief, we do not minimize the loss of their lives by trying to give simple answers. Because there are no answers. ”
He said the entire North Cork community had been hit by the tragedy.
“Grief is never easy to bear – and never again when it comes to us, which can only be described as untimely, shocking and tragic,” he said.
“We gather today in such sorrow – we carry a burden that not only appears to be overwhelming, but is actually overwhelming.”
“We gather to comfort and support one another in our common loss. We gather to understand the pointless. ”
“Today’s Gospel of Luke, which is the Passion of Christ, speaks of a darkness coming over the whole world. In fact, it seemed to be the same darkness, the darkest hour of creation – enveloped the O’Sullivan family and the local church here in Castlemagner for the past number of days. ”
“The shock, the numbness, the devastation were inconceivable and the news of the loss of three lives was incomprehensible.”
“Like all of you, I struggle to understand this life-changing tragedy.”
“Tadg O’Sullivan was in the local automotive trade for over 40 years. Because of my own encounters with him, I always found him very accommodating, friendly and happy in his chosen area. ”
Diarmuid attended school in Ballyhass and Kanturk like his older brother Mark and also made contacts in Castlemagner.
“He studied accounting at the Cork Institute of Technology (CIT). He finished his studies last June and should be conferring online next week. CIT paid tribute to him and underlined the shock the CIT community felt at the tragedy. ”
“You could imagine that life was full of possibilities for him.”
St. Mary’s maintained strict level 5 Covid-19 controls with only a small group of family members and friends attending the Requiem Mass.
However, as a token of respect, the locals lined the burial path as. The troop traveled to St. Brigid’s Cemetery in Castlemagner.
The family had asked people not to send flowers and to consider donating to the Cliona Ring Foundation instead.
After the Requiem Mass, Tadg and Diarmuid were taken to St. Brigid in separate hearses, where they were buried together.
Mark’s funeral, which is private and for family members only, takes place on Saturday at the Church of the Immaculate Conception.
His family asked for donations to the Jack and Jill Foundation instead of flowers.
Mark’s Requiem mass will be broadcast live on the Kanturk Congregation website at 3:30 p.m.
Counseling services are provided to people in the community who are traumatized by the triple tragedy.
Gardaí is waiting for the results of ballistic and forensic tests, which they hope will be able to piece together the exact sequence of events that led to the triple tragedy.
Up to seven shots were fired in Mark’s bedroom in what Gardaí thought was a carefully deliberate attack.
The young lawyer had injuries to his hands – an indication that he had fought for his life and tried desperately to protect himself.
After Mark’s shooting, Tadg and Diarmuid went to a field called “The Fort,” about 600 meters from the farmhouse, where they are believed to have died.
Two rifles – .22 caliber hunting rifles – were found next to their bodies, which were only two meters apart.
A detailed personal note was found on Diarmuid’s body, outlining his fear of the inheritance litigation and the resulting division of the family.
The note was left to his mother’s attention.
The long note that found Diarmuid’s body is believed to have been written a few hours before the triple shooting – indicating that the attack was completely deliberate.
Elements of the note, which is a dozen pages long, were described by one source as “very annoying”.
The family dispute escalated two weeks ago when details of a proposed will was revealed that would favor Mark in inheriting the farm.
However, the disagreement over the farm’s inheritance goes back nearly eight months as legal correspondence was conducted regarding the feud discovered in the farmhouse.
Diarmuid was deeply upset by the proposed terms of the will.
Tadg was apparently very upset with the treatment of his younger son and the failure to reach a compromise on the inheritance.
While Gardaí is treating the matter as a criminal investigation, they are not looking for anyone in connection with the incident.
A file is being prepared for the North Cork Coroner containing an investigation to be carried out next year.
Both Tadg and Diarmuid died from close range gunshot wounds to the head.
