Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau condemned the bloody attack that took place in Nice, France, today, Thursday, describing it as a “heinous” terrorist act, saying that its perpetrators “cannot define Muslims.”
The French authorities said that an attacker armed with a knife killed three people in a church in the city on the Mediterranean in southern France, prompting the country to raise the state of security alert to the highest level. French media quoted sources familiar with the investigations as saying that the attacker was a twenty-one-year-old Tunisian immigrant, but the authorities did not provide any details.
“It was a heinous and criminal act that could not be justified in any way and an affront to all of our values,” Trudeau said on Thursday at a news conference after a hypothetical meeting with European Union officials. “The criminals, terrorists and cold-blooded killers who carried out these attacks do not represent Islam,” he added. “They do not know the identity of Muslims in France or Canada or anywhere around the world.” Trudeau also expressed his condolences to the families of the victims.
Earlier in the day, Quebec Bloc leader Yves Francois Blanchett called on Trudeau to issue a strong condemnation of the attacks, arguing that the prime minister was not strong enough to condemn the previous attacks.
