At least 50 died after typhoon in Vietnam – VG

“Molave” is the strongest typhoon to hit Vietnam in over 20 years, and at least 50 people are said to have lost their lives in landslides as a result of the extreme weather.

“This is one of our biggest relief operations ever,” Vietnamese Red Cross President Thi Xuan Thu Nguyen said in a news release Wednesday, according to Reuters.

Typhoon “Molave” hit land just south of the city of Da Nang, as a category 2 hurricane with wind speeds of up to 165 kilometers per hour in addition to large amounts of rain.

Already early Wednesday, two people were confirmed dead, and 26 people from two fishing boats were missing, writes the news agency AP.

Reuters writes that 13 people have been confirmed dead, and at least 40 are missing after the typhoon. At least 56,000 homes are said to have been damaged and millions lost power.

More than 1.3 million people will live in the evacuation zones, and around 250,000 soldiers have been mobilized to contribute, writes CNN.
