According to the international press, the 27 sailors aboard the ship Kallisto were rescued by patrol boats from the Greek coast guard and the wounded were taken to the Navy hospital in Athens.
A spokesman for the Greek Merchant Marine Ministry said, quoted by AFP, that the mine-dredge vessel suffered severe damage at the stern and was towed to the naval base on the neighboring island of Salamina. The vessel cannot be repaired.
Public television ERT reported that the military ship was “almost cut in half” and that it took “almost three hours” to tow it. “It is a miracle that no one has died,” Government spokesman Stelios Petsas told Newsit. “We wonder how it was possible for the freighter to hit and almost go over the warship,” he added.
