In the fatal accident, 28-year-old police officer Jeroen Leuwerink from Asten died. He had just graduated and only recently joined the police force in Helmond. His colleagues write the following on Facebook: “Jeroen was a policeman through and through. We knew him as a very enthusiastic colleague who enjoyed everything that police work entailed. Unfortunately his career lasted far too short and he passed away during the execution of the profession he so aspired to. Another colleague was also injured in this incident. She spent one night in hospital for observation and is now back home with her family to recover from this terrible incident. ”

Brother in blue

The team is very sympathetic to Leuwerink’s family and girlfriend. The colleagues write about this: “We are also very shocked by his death and cannot yet comprehend it. At the office in Helmond we have set up a quiet room where colleagues can leave a final greeting and their thoughts for Jeroen and his family. We are going to say goodbye to Jeroen in an appropriate way. He is already being missed. We don’t have more words right now… ‘We will take it from here… brother in blue.’ ”

The drama took place when the officers drove back in their service car to the police station in Helmond, where they both work. They saw an apparently hit animal lying on the roadway. The officers stopped their official car to remove the animal from the road so that it could not cause unsafe traffic situations. At the moment that the officers were outside their official car to remove the animal, a collision occurred between a car coming from behind, coming from the direction of Eindhoven.

No alcohol or drugs

First aid to no avail for agent Leuwerink. His female colleague was injured and transferred to the hospital where she has since been released. The motorist who was also involved in the collision is a 36-year-old man from Helmond. He was treated in hospital for his injuries and is back home.

Research showed that there was no alcohol or drugs involved. The man has been formally designated as a suspect. “He is still being questioned about his involvement in the collision. The investigation must show whether he can be blamed for anything, ”said a police spokesman.
