International tourism was hit hard by the covid-19 pandemic

Amid the restrictions in place due to the covid-19 pandemic, renewed with the fear of a second wave of the disease, it has never been more difficult for Brazilians to travel abroad.

In fact, most major international destinations do not yet allow foreigners to enter.

The bad news is that there is no prediction of when this will change.

In contrast, the most recent change is the announcement that Argentina will soon reopen its air and sea borders to neighboring countries.

BBC News Brasil lists below the current rules of the main destinations for Brazilian tourists abroad and to which countries the trip is cleared. Check out.

In the United States, which has the largest number of cases and killed by covid-19, restrictions on international tourists remain in effect.

About a month ago, the Donald administration announced the lifting of the restriction on flights departing from some countries, including Brazil. But, in practice, foreigners who were in Brazil for 14 days before entering the USA are still prohibited from entering American territory, unless they are citizens of the country, legal permanent residents (people with green card), immediate family members of US citizens and specific categories. Students are not among those exempted from the rules. Check out who can enter here.

The rule, therefore, does not prevent Brazilians from entering the USA. Therefore, there were reports of some trying to enter via Mexico.

“The CDC (US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) statement and the publication of DHS (US Department of Homeland Security) do not change who is allowed to enter the United States under presidential proclamation,” says the United States Embassy in Brazil in a note released in September.

At the same time, “the new measures implemented on September 14, 2020 will include the interruption of health screening for those arriving from certain countries, including Brazil. The CDC continues to recommend that international travelers be quarantined for 14 days when traveling high-risk areas “, adds the note.

Brazilian cannot travel to the European Union

European Union (except United Kingdom)

Brazil is not on the list of countries whose citizens can travel to the European Union. The rule applies to all 27 member countries of the economic bloc, including, therefore, the main tourist destinations for Brazilians in Europe, such as Portugal, Spain, France and Italy.

But there are exceptions: Brazilians who have dual European nationality or who are legal residents in these countries can travel to Europe. Passengers in transit and those traveling for the purpose of studying are also allowed to enter. The same applies to “health and elderly care professionals and health researchers”. Also exempt from veto are “passengers traveling for imperative family reasons” and “highly qualified workers from third countries, if their work is economically necessary and cannot be postponed or performed abroad”.

The United Kingdom, which left the European Union and finalizes its transition process in January next year, making the so-called “Brexit”, allows Brazilian tourists to enter.

But before arriving in the country, every traveler, even in transit, must individually fill out an online form.

Minors under the age of 18 may be included in the form of the parent responsible, provided they arrive and depart from the United Kingdom together and stay at the same address in the country.

The form must be completed at least 48 hours before arrival in the United Kingdom.

The 14-day quarantine for those coming from Brazil is mandatory.

Despite this, according to the Brazilian Consulate in London, “some airlines are not allowing Brazilian tourists to embark for the United Kingdom. We suggest contacting the airline before purchasing the desired ticket”.

Argentina’s borders are closed to foreigners and non-residents. As informed on Saturday (24/10) the country’s Minister of Tourism, Matiías Lammens, the borders will be reopened to neighboring countries, including Brazil, from November.

Entry will only be authorized for the time being, according to him, by air (through Ezeiza airport) and by sea (through the port of Buenos Aires), and not by land borders. Quarantine will not be required. It is believed that a coronavirus exam will be performed on the arrival of visitors, or will be asked to bring a negative exam.

Chile’s borders will be closed to foreigners and non-residents only until this Monday (10/26). For the time being, Chileans and foreigners residing in Chile who enter the country must comply with mandatory 14-day quarantine.

Mexico reopened borders to foreigners without restrictions

Brazilians and other foreigners cannot enter Japan.

Australia’s borders are closed. The only ones who can enter the country are Australians, residents, immediate family members and travelers who have been to New Zealand for the past 14 days.

Which countries can Brazilians travel to?

Some countries in the world allow Brazilian tourists to enter without restrictions.

Among them, for example, are Mexico, Turkey and Serbia.

In the case of Mexico, foreign tourists must complete the “Questionnaire for Identifying Risk Factors in Travelers” form, available on the Mexican government website.

In the case of Turkey, entry is permitted, but authorities continue to conduct medical screening at the country’s airports. If symptoms are present, travelers will be tested. And if they test positive, they will receive medical treatment.

Serbia allows tourists to travel to the country without mandatory testing or isolation, with the exception of those arriving from Croatia, Bulgaria, North Macedonia and Romania.

Other countries accept to accept Brazilian tourists, provided certain conditions are met, such as presenting the negative test for covid-19. This is the case of Ecuador and Colombia, in South America. Or Bosnia and Herzegovina and Ukraine, in Europe.

In Asia, South Korea allows foreigners to enter, regardless of nationality, but it is mandatory to undergo a test for covid-19 and quarantine for 14 days. However, all visa exemptions for countries exempt from this document, such as Brazil, have been suspended.

In Africa, Egypt has reopened its borders, but requires foreigners who do not live in the country to submit a negative covid-19 PCR test carried out at most 72 hours in advance. In addition, health insurance is mandatory. Tourism is limited to resorts in three coastal provinces.
