life resumes at Jemaa Fna

Dozens of groups of artists from the famous Jemaa Fna Square were invited on Saturday to host shows with a view to reviving the mythical square during a day of artistic performance.

Initiated by the Tensift Region Development Center (CDRT) and the Grand Atlas Association in collaboration and coordination with the Wilaya of the Marrakech-Safi region, this cultural and artistic event was intended to send a strong message, that of the solidarity and hope for a return to normal in this mythical place, which aspires to welcome with open arms, in the very near future, its visitors and its artists.

For nearly three hours, storytellers, Gnawi musicians, Ghiwanis, agile acrobats, all these living memories, which make the reputation of this place, animated and reinvested Jemâa El Fna, beating heart of Marrakech, high place of attraction , historic site emblematic of tourism in Morocco and an essential address for all Moroccans.

These scenes of entertainment, unusual in this exceptional situation, succeeded in bringing Jemaâ Fna out of the silence and torpor, imposed by the Covid-19 pandemic and in attracting tourists and residents of the ocher city, who came to admire with many emotions an intangible heritage that is the pride of all Moroccans.

This cultural event, which took place in strict compliance with health measures aimed at stopping the spread of the new coronavirus (Covid-19), aimed to signal that tourist and cultural activity is gradually resuming in the ocher city and in the Jemaâ Fna square, told MAP, the president of the CDRT, Ahmed Chehbouni, noting that this event aims primarily to provide material support for the artists of the square, who had to empty the premises to comply with the instructions of the competent authorities while waiting for better days.

And to note that this kind of laudable initiatives of mutual aid and solidarity is called to multiply with regard to this fringe of the society, which lives day by day from the receipts of their artistic creations and whose activity has been hit hard by the repercussions of the Covid-19 pandemic.

At the same time as the shows, the two associations carried out an awareness campaign on the dangers of Covid-19 and the means to guard against it and proceeded to the distribution of 2,000 protective masks to passers-by.

One of the most famous places in the world, registered as intangible cultural heritage since 2008 and world heritage since 1985 by UNESCO, the Place de Jemâa El Fna welcomes more than 2 million visitors annually.
