PCs and Android devices have robust support for a range of peripherals, including Xbox and Stadia controllers. If you’ve been wondering if this includes the DualSense controller on Sony’s upcoming PlayStation 5, the answer is mostly yes.
Thanks to Austin Evans on YouTube, we’ve got confirmation that the next generation controller can connect to PC and Android. In an in-depth video of the DualSense controller’s hardware, which also shows a neat textured design on the back with small triangles, squares, circles, and crosses, Evans demonstrates how the controller works with a Surface laptop instantly connection (around 6 : 20 in the video).
Evans also manages to wirelessly connect the PlayStation 5’s DualSense controller to his Google Pixel 5 via Bluetooth (approx. 6:50 in the video), and then plays a game that is streamed via Microsoft’s Xbox Game Streaming. Bluetooth compatibility can be a mess on Android, especially when it comes to latency and key mapping. So it’s nice to know that it just works. There is one caveat, however: when Evans hooked up the controller to his PC and Android device, he wasn’t exposed to any of the controller’s new features, including haptic feedback and adaptive triggering.
He’s also trying to pair the PS5’s DualSense controller with other devices, including a PlayStation 4 Pro and an Xbox Series X, but he wasn’t very lucky to get the controller to do much. None of the consoles recognize keystrokes from the DualSense controller, but this may change with future firmware updates (however, you cannot assume that support will be added to the Xbox).
According to Sony, the PS5’s DualSense controller is only compatible with the upcoming console, but the video clearly shows something different. The PlayStation 5 is scheduled to launch on November 12th. So it won’t be long before we can all connect the DualSense controller to our own Android devices. After all, the best controller is the one you have on you.
- Sony’s new next-generation controller offers haptic feedback, adaptive triggers, and a built-in microphone and headset jack for all of your PlayStation 5 gaming needs.
