The budget smartwatch we’ve been waiting for

Smartwatch fans outside of China may finally be able to get their hands on an inexpensive smartwatch: the Xiaomi Mi Watch Color Sports Edition has been officially revealed.

At Xiaomi’s big smartphone launch event last month, it was announced that a global launch was being prepared for an international version of its Mi Watch.

Some pictures were shown of a device that looked very different from the original Mi Watch and slightly different from the (even cheaper) Mi Watch Color, both of which were launched in China earlier this year.

We now know that the images are from the brand new Xiaomi Mi Watch Color Sports Edition, which adds the SpO2 sensor to the mix.

The good news is that the price is still low – it will cost ¥699 when it goes on sale in China next month.

Global prices are a release date yet to be announced, but this price tag suggests a price tag of around £ 85 when it hits our stores.

Here’s what you get for it …

Features of the Xiaomi Mi Watch Color Sports Edition

Is it optically most similar to the Mi Watch Color? The original Mi Watch was a box-shaped Apple Watch clone.

The Mi Watch Color Sports Edition weighs 32.5 g and has a 1.39-inch AMOLED display with a resolution of 454 x 454.

It’s packed with sensors for all that sports-based tracking: heart rate, GPS, Glonass, and SpO2 blood oxygen show that it’s not here to be dominated by Apple and Fitbit.

There are 117 exercise modes including running, yoga, boxing, triathlon, and high-intensity interval training. Thanks to a water resistance of 5 ATM, it is also swim-friendly.

Xiaomi states that 30 key metrics are analyzed during a sports lesson or training session. Think about calories burned, stress, pace, BPMs, SpO2 and more.

The on-board battery is a 420 mAh cell with a promised two-week life on a single charge. Obviously, once you speed up the use of the sensor, especially the GPS, this will get a hit.

There are three colors to choose from for the bezel and case: black, blue and ivory; and there are another six color options when it comes to the silicone strap.

The Xiaomi Mi Watch Color Sports Edition can now be pre-ordered directly from Xiaomi. Shipping in China is planned for the first week of November.

Full house

When the Mi Watch Sports Edition goes on sale outside of China, it will enter an expanding market where many Chinese phone manufacturers are aggressively targeting smartwatches.

Huawei has seen traction with its Watch GT range, which impressed us with long battery life and health-oriented features. although the closed operating system is slightly restrictive.

And Amazfit, whose owner Huami has a manufacturing partnership with Xiaomi, has also announced the GTS2 and GTR2 models, which offer sports tracking and features similar to the Mi Watch at a slightly high price.

And finally, the TicWatch GTX was recently announced for £ 54.99, undercutting the Amazfit Bip S for £ 64.99.

The budget smartwatch market is currently on fire.
