A premature baby, born at just 23 weeks of age, survived six hours in a morgue refrigerator after being mistakenly pronounced dead.

Undertakers said they found the newborn was breathing after being called to collect its body and hand it over to its parents for funeral, reports The Sun.

The hospital bosses have now opened an investigation.

The incredible survival story took place in a hospital called La Margarita in the Mexican city of Puebla.

EMOTIONAL REUNION

The footage shows the moment the baby’s father watched over the crying death, telling him to stay strong and persevere after an emotional reunion now goes viral.

The unnamed baby, who is said to have been born on Wednesday at 4:29 a.m. local time, is said to have been saved alive around 10 a.m.

Doctors told the local press on Thursday that the baby was now being observed in a newborn intensive care unit.

In footage shot immediately after the amazing discovery, the baby’s father can be heard telling his son to “keep fighting.”

He reassures the little child: “Here I am. Keep fighting, little one, defy my love.

“The boy is crying, he is still crying, he is alive. Poor boy who keeps fighting the little one.

“Please God, come with this little one, stay with him because he’s still alive.”

Cry and move

Miguel Angel Flores, owner of undertaker Funeraria Flores, said he was shocked to find the baby alive when he came to collect the body.

“When we got there, we found it was crying and moving,” said Flores.

“We called the father and he saw that he was crying, so we urgently called the doctor who signed the death certificate.

“The baby was born just after 4am and was found alive around 10am. So that’s almost six hours it spent in the morgue refrigerator.

“I can’t understand how he didn’t die while he was there. The refrigerator it was in is usually used to hold the limbs of amputees. I’ve never seen anything like it. ”

The IMSS in Puebla, a government organization that is part of the Mexican health system, confirmed that an investigation is ongoing.

A statement said: “In the early morning hours of October 21, a baby was born prematurely after 23 weeks.

“It was found that it has no vital functions. It was pronounced dead and taken to the hospital morgue.

“When the body was due to be handed over to a relative, medical personnel and an undertaker representative determined that the baby was alive.

“It received immediate medical attention before it was taken to a newborn intensive care unit.

“Because it was born so early it is unfortunately impossible to predict at this point how the situation will develop.

“The hospital authorities have spoken to the baby’s father and will continue to provide the family with information on the adolescent’s health.

“The case is being investigated.”

The scandal sparked anger on social media when a Twitter user described the hospital as “incompetent.” Another added, “I hope the hospital will be sued.”
