– We at Frisk Asker sympathize with Mats and the family and will do our utmost to be there and support them in the time to come. The most important thing for Mats now is to be able to rest so that he can use all his strength and energy during the tough rehabilitation period that lies ahead of him. The family is touched and enormously grateful for all the warmth and support they have received from the entire hockey family, the press release states.

– Max bad luck

The 18-year-old’s injury came when he collided with the target in Askerhallen.

– I unfortunately think that the player who was seriously injured has had maximum bad luck. He has hit the target as wrong as it is possible to hit it. This is of course tragic for him, said Secretary General Ottar Eide of the Norwegian Ice Hockey Association to Nettavisen on Sunday.

Eide said that the same requirements are set for the goals in all ice hockey halls in Norway as internationally, but that in Askerhallen they have played with a dispensation for a different fastening solution than the most common.

Askerhallen was built in 1969, and there the targets are attached to the ice somewhat differently than in newer ice rinks.

While it is common to use flexible spikes in rubber, so-called “flex pegs”, to attach the dimensions to the ice, in the case of Askerhallen other and more static spikes are used under the metal posts.

These are not drilled as far downwards, to avoid contact with the freezing mechanism in the concrete below the ice surface.
