Taking posters with phrases like “No to totalitarianism of thought” and “I am a teacher”, the crowd honors this murdered teacher, after showing cartoons of the prophet Muhammad in the classroom.

“I’m Samuel!”, “Freedom of speech, freedom of teaching!” Shouted those present, amid long applause.

Also present were Prime Minister Jean Castex; the mayor of Paris, Anne Hidalgo; the president of the Paris region, Valérie Pécresse; and the head of the Insubmissible party, Jean-Luc Mélenchon.

Around the statue of Place de la Republique, which continued to fill with people, some waved French flags, and others, posters that said “It is dark in the country of Lights”.
