One-eyed “cyclops” baby shark discovered by fishermen in Indonesia

When the larger predator was cut open to remove its entrails, shocked fishermen found the unusual baby inside.

It had a large eye in the middle of the forehead, a milky white body and fully developed fins.

The larger predator is believed to be pregnant when it was caught in the net.

One of the fishermen said, “We found three babies inside … but one of them looked strange with only one eye.

“The color was strange too … like milk.”

Those on board reported their strange catch to the local maritime bureau before handing over the unborn baby shark for testing.

The fisherman explained that the mother was already dead when they found it.

The condition of the shark – known as cyclopia – is a rare congenital disorder characterized by the fact that the front part of the brain does not properly divide the eye tracts into two cavities.

It occurs within the spectrum of brain and facial defects known as holoprosencephaly, which in severe cases can lead to miscarriages or stillbirths.

The other obvious condition of the baby shark – albinism – causes the animal to produce low levels of melanin, which is responsible for the pigment in the body.

It’s not the first time a one-eyed shark has appeared from the deep.

In 2011, it was reported that one of the extremely rare creatures was found in the womb of a bull shark in the Gulf of California.

The marine expert Felipe Galvan Magana from the Mexican Centro Interdisciplinario de Ciencias del Mar said at the time: “This is extremely rare.

“As far as I know, fewer than 50 examples of such an anomaly have been recorded.”
