Peru reported this Wednesday less than 64,000 active cases of the pandemic of the COVID-19, a figure similar to that of the end of last April, and confirmed that the new infected weekly have decreased by half in Lima.

Despite the sustained decline of the disease in the country, both the political and health authorities reiterated their request to citizens to maintain security measures and social distancing to avoid a second wave of the epidemic.

MINUTE BY MINUTE

With a total of 33,512 deaths and 856,951 infected since the first case was detected in the country, on March 6, Peru remains the country with the highest mortality rate in the world and the eighth with the most cases of the epidemic .

SIGNIFICANT REDUCTION

The head of the Intelligence and Data Analysis Unit of the EsSalud social security system, Dante Cersso, told the official Andina agency that between this week and the previous one there has been a great reduction in new cases in Metropolitan Lima.

“Between week 40, from September 27 to October 3, compared to the previous week, the cases decreased by half. We had about 34,000 new cases a week and now we are close to 17,000 ″, he explained.

The specialist stressed that these figures had not been recorded since the end of last April, when the country was under strict quarantine, so he considered that “this is good news and the trend is for it to continue decreasing.”

“We have recently updated the figures and we already have information at the end of week 41, which runs from October 4 to 10. If we keep comparing between weeks, now the decrease is 10%. In other words, from the 34,000 we have dropped to 17,000, and from that figure we have dropped to about 15,000 cases, “he explained.

LATEST FIGURES

At the national level, the daily report of the Ministry of Health (Minsa) reported this Wednesday that the confirmed cases of COVID-19 reached 856,951, after detecting another 1,219 infected in the last 24 hours.

However, of that total, 759,597 people have already been discharged from a medical center or completed their home quarantine, while the deceased amounted to 33,512, adding 93 deaths since the previous report.

Thus, in Peru there are currently 63,842 active cases of the disease, of which 6,237 are hospitalized and 1,163 of them in intensive care units (ICU) with mechanical ventilation.

EXHORTATION OF THE PRESIDENT

Despite the positive figures, the president of Peru, Martín Vizcarra, asked citizens not to neglect health security measures to avoid a second wave of the disease, similar to that reported in Europe.

“We know that the data that the Minister of Health gives us is of a decline and decrease of infected, hospitalized, people in ICU and deaths in recent weeks and we see that in other countries that curve has begun to increase, a second wave because they trusted. They had crowded beaches and bars. We have to be responsible and work until the vaccine arrives ”, he emphasized.

Vizcarra said that, for this reason, the Government insists on requesting “the collaboration of the people and supervision of authorities”, because “the virus continues” in the country.

“The virus is still with us. Let’s not entrust ourselves to later be lamenting, as other countries of the regrowth are doing. It depends on us ”, he warned.

“HOT SPOTS”

In fact, the head of EsSalud’s Intelligence and Data Analysis Unit pointed out that the districts of Barranco, Pueblo Libre and Villa El Salvador are the new “hot spots” for the disease in Lima.

Specialists are concerned that this increase in cases occurs in districts with a larger population, such as Villa El Salvador, because that would lead to the virus spreading “more rapidly.”

“It was warned that the beaches could be a new source of contagion and that is how a series of measures began to be activated. We see a proactive attitude on the part of the local authorities ”, highlighted Cersso.

The Prime Minister of Peru, Walter Martos, has indicated in recent days that the Executive is analyzing the possibility of closing access to Lima’s beaches during the summer season, although he said that this decision will be made after evaluating the behavior of citizens who go to the many spas in the Peruvian capital.
