Huawei goes its own way: Instead of installing apps from the Play Store, owners of Huawei smartphones access the Huawei AppGallery. The structure implemented behind it is called “Huawei Mobile Services” or HMS for short. The ecosystem is expected to grow rapidly: Compared to 2019, the number of developers for HMS has doubled, and in 2020 1.8 million developers are already working on applications for HMS.

Huawei: Nearly 100,000 apps in the Huawei AppGallery

“Global sales of HMS smartphones have been growing rapidly since May of this year and are receiving strong support from developers, partners and, above all, global users. In the course of this, we invite other developers and partners to actively join us and to spread their innovations globally, ”said Zhang Ping’an, President of Consumer Cloud Service, with satisfaction.

By September 2020, 96,000 applications had already been integrated into the HMS core worldwide. The HMS apps are being rolled out around the world on an ongoing basis, with the focus on content apps such as Huawei Music, Huawei Video, Huawei Themes, Huawei Reader and Huawei GameCenter. To date, the AppGallery has also integrated 73,000 country-specific applications – significantly more than in 2019, when 6,000 apps were included. From January to August 2020, applications in the Huwei AppGallery were downloaded 261 billion times.

AppGallery: “Pioneering, open platform”

The AppGallery is accordingly already the third largest app marketplace in the world. Over 490 million monthly active users worldwide download apps here easily and securely. Huawei’s goal is to work with the world’s most innovative developers to turn the AppGallery into a future-oriented, open app platform.

Popular apps and games can be found and installed via the AppGallery – as known from the Play Store or App Store. Whether and WhatsApp, Microsoft Office, Amazon Shopping or top games like Asphalt 9 and Fortnite – the variety is great and growing every day. Local teams of experts work continuously to ensure that other important apps for the local and international market are integrated into the AppGallery. Austrian users can therefore already find top apps such as ORF TVthek and the applications from Puls24, ÖBB, Willhaben, mjam or the domestic mobile phone providers in the Huawei AppGallery.

My ELBA and George brand new

The Mein ELBA app from Raiffeisen Bank is brand new, and Erste Bank has also successfully moved into the AppGallery with George and its apps. All smartphones of the new generation – i.e. from the P40 series – support the banking applications with all known functions. More local apps are added every week.

Huawei: International Security Standards

The AppGallery naturally complies with international security standards, so personal data is always safe. There is also a separate “Parental Control” feature for parents. In general, the AppGallery is structured very intuitively: Experts continuously present a curated collection of new, recommended applications in turns, there are also lists with the top apps of the month and of course the classic sorting by categories. Huawei has integrated a wishlist so that nobody gets lost. And with the “Quick App” feature, 5G games and apps can even be used without having to install them.

Five different service engines for developers

Important for developers worldwide: So-called service engines. To put it simply, these are building blocks that programmers can access and build on. In the case of mobile services, these are “Search”, “Card”, “Payment”, “Browser” and “Ads”. The HMS search engine is available in more than 170 countries and regions worldwide. The HMS map app has collected more than 180 million POI information and offers eleven functions. Currently, more than 2,000 local applications are integrated into the HMS Map Engine. The HMS Payment Engine offers developers global and localized mobile payment functions. Huawei Browser provides smart, accurate, and high quality web browsing services as well as support for rapid diffusion. And “Ads” in turn offers efficient services for the payment process. In this way, developers can easily and quickly expand globally via HMS.

The way to the Huawei AppGallery

If you want to program an app for the AppGallery, you have to complete four steps. At the beginning there is registration with Huawei Developer in order to get access to the mentioned functions and services for app creation. The development tools can then be used. If the app is up and running, the manufacturer provides numerous options for user acquisition and additional promotion channels. Step four is then easy: watch the download numbers grow and – if the app is not free – enjoy the first income.
