A 45 year old COVID-19 patient from the UK suddenly lost his hearing. Doctors said the man had asthma but was otherwise fit and healthy before he was suddenly diagnosed with sensorineural hearing loss (SSNHL). Metro Reports. SSNHL, or sudden numbness is an inexplicable rapid hearing loss, either all at once or within 72 hours.

So far it has been reported that only five people worldwide have experienced the same COVID-19 complication of hearing loss, and this anonymous man is the first in the UK. According to his doctors, the patient has only partially regained part of his hearing.

Experts warned that hearing loss could be easily missed in ICU patients, so urged doctors to be aware of the symptoms of the complication. Awareness of this could help doctors find relief or treatment early on to prevent hearing loss from becoming a permanent condition.

According to researchers from the University of Manchester, one in eight coronavirus patients can see some changes in their hearing after recovering.

COVID-19 patient suddenly suffered hearing loss

MailOnline reported that the Briton had had COVID-19 symptoms for ten days before he was hospitalized and taken to intensive care for needing help with breathing for 30 days.

The man suffered many complications such as high blood pressure, blood clots, anemia, and ventilator-associated pneumonia due to COVID-19.

He was given remdesivir, the first drug approved for NHS patients in the UK, which made him feel better. Then, a week later, he was taken off his breathing tube and intensive care unit. However, he did notice a continuous ringing in his left ear called tinnitus. Then he suddenly suffered hearing loss.

When the doctors examined him a week later, they didn’t find any blockages or inflammation, but his hearing test showed that the sense of hearing in the left ear was badly lost.

The man was given the oral steroid prednisolone as treatment for seven days, which partially improved his hearing. In addition, the steroid was injected into his left ear. But after that there was no improvement.

According to a previous Science Times report, some COVID-19 patients, including asymptomatic ones, may become deaf or tinnitus as a result of the studies conducted.

Sudden hearing loss adds to the list of COVID-19 complications

With the increasing number of patients reporting hearing loss due to COVID-19, this complication is now adding to the long-term complications of the deadly disease, along with heart, lung and liver damage.

According to a report by BMJ, around five to 160 cases per 100,000 cases have had hearing loss, although the cause is not yet clear, but it could be infection with flu, rheumatoid arthritis, herpes, and HIV.

“Despite the small number of studies, it is important to consider the possibility of a relationship between Covid-19 and SSNHL,” the researchers said.

They added that with the number of cases rising in the UK, it is important to investigate hearing loss complications in COVID-19. Identifying and treating the patients who have developed the complication should be important in gaining access to medical services.
