Coronavirus: Angry Daniel Andrews accuses Peta Credlin

Daniel Andrews clashed with Peta Credlin during a fiery press conference Thursday afternoon in which he accused her of fabricating facts.

The Prime Minister grew increasingly frustrated when he was grilled by the Sky News host over Victoria’s hotel quarantine debacle.

Credlin asked Mr. Andrews about the decision to use private security forces instead of ADF troops to occupy the quarantine hotels.

During a long question she said, “You obviously announced private security in the hotel quarantine on March 27th.”

Mr. Andrews interrupted her and insisted that this was not true.

“I didn’t announce any private security on March 27, we’ve been through this a couple of times,” he said.

“I’m not going to stand here and have things brought to me, perhaps to bring them to me so often that they become the truth.

‘I didn’t make that announcement on the 27th. I was referring to private security, I was referring to the Victoria Police Department, and I was referring to our entire health team, ”Andrews said.

“In the next breath I stated that these matters had not been resolved.”

He added, “I don’t want to be close, but we’ve done this a couple of times. I’m not going to keep coming up with things that are absolutely wrong for whatever reason.

“I made it very clear in my statement that these matters were not resolved. Facts are important. No announcement was made that day. ‚

Credlin, former Prime Minister Tony Abbott’s chief of staff, began reading the key lines of his statement to the media on March 27.

He tried to interrupt before she said, “Excuse me, Premier, I’ll be done.”

Mr. Andrews replied curtly, “I have no doubt that you will finish, I have no doubt at all.”

Regarding their previous clashes during press conferences, he said, “This is now the second or third time you tell me something that is absolutely wrong and I will not have it.

“You can ask me any question you like and you are entitled to … but facts are important and no such announcement was made that day.”

“To say otherwise is simply imprecise.”

The second wave of the virus in Victoria, killing around 800 people, was triggered by outbreaks at two quarantine hotels in May and June.

The clash came after Victoria registered just six new cases of coronavirus, five fewer than New South Wales.

When asked why Melbourne was stuck recording fewer cases than Sydney, Andrews said there were 175 active cases in Victoria and only 40 in NSW.

Melbourne national treasurer Josh Frydenberg urged Andrews to give the Victorians their freedom back on Sunday.

Mr Andrews said he would relax some restrictions but did not say which ones.
