With its iPhone 12 line, Apple is resurrecting MagSafe, which older MacBook users are familiar with. We’re already a fan.

MagSafe is the real novelty of the iPhone 12 range, although the word novelty should be taken with caution. Indeed, this technology will bring back happy memories to old MacBook users, those who did not yet rely on USB-C to fill their battery, but offered an appreciable safety net (getting caught up in the wire was not a danger). Apple’s magnetic connector is making a comeback in 2020, but for iPhones. Today, MagSafe takes the form of a small wireless charging roller, which sticks to the back of the phone using magnets (think of the Apple Watch charger).

But MagSafe is much more than a simple substitute for Qi technology, which it buries in the Apple universe in terms of power and, by extension, of charging speed (15W against 7.5W for the iPhone). It is a great revenge on the AirPower, an ultra promising station that Apple has not been able to master. MagSafe, which represents in the minds of some an argument that the Cupertino company should not have given up, is a lifeline to forget a dismal failure. It is also a springboard for a whole range of more or less interesting accessories.

MagSafe allows you to forget AirPower

In terms of uses, MagSafe goes a little further than a simple refill roller. Because it relies on magnets, you’re sure your iPhone is making enough contact with the induction coils – with the perfect fit (Apple Watch owners can attest to that). As a bonus, as your phone will no longer be placed, but connected, you can continue to use it while it recovers its autonomy. Sold for 45 euros, the MagSafe charger simply needs to be plugged into an AC adapter (USB-C) and the length of the wire will give you a little freedom to handle your iPhone.

During its keynote broadcast on October 13, Apple also lifted the veil on a dual charger: on one side, for the iPhone, on the other for the Apple Watch. It can be folded up on itself to facilitate its transport. It is, in a way, a mini AirPower with reduced ambitions. Good news, MagSafe is not exclusive to the iPhone 12 range. All models compatible with wireless charging will be able to refuel with the charger: from the iPhone 8 to the iPhone 12 Pro, including the iPhone SE. AirPods are also affected, as long as their case accepts wireless charging. However, only the iPhone 12 will benefit from the magnets.

Apple thought of MagSafe for more than just charging. In its catalog, we discover a whole host of magnetic accessories. We think first of all of the silicone cases at 55 euros, which will not prevent the iPhone and the charger from connecting. We even discover a card holder, sold 65 euros and which is attached to the back of the phone (or a compatible shell).

In short, MagSafe is the one more thing who could make us adopt wireless charging.
