It was followed by a “verbal argument,” said department head Joe Montoya during a press conference on Saturday evening. Two cannons and a can of maces were recovered from the scene.

Police said the victim was taken to hospital at 3:49 p.m. but died an hour later.

“This shooting is currently being investigated as a murder,” Denver police said in a statement. “Updates will be released as soon as information is available.”

In a follow-up statement, the Denver Police Department said they had arrested two suspects in the early hours of Sunday morning but later announced that one had been released.

The video shows officers arresting a suspect outside the museum at the end of the rally.

In another video shared online, a shot can be heard as witnesses rush to the scene. You see two men with their hands in the air while they are surrounded by officers.

The incident occurred during two ideologically opposed protests, both held in Denver’s Civic Center Park near the Denver Art Museum.

A protest called “BLM-Antifa Soup Drive” was held by the communists in Denver, while a “Patriot Muster” rally was organized at the same location, asking supporters to “stand up” and “show up”.

Videos showed violent clashes between protesters before the incident.

It is unclear whether the suspect or the victim was affiliated with any of the groups, Chief Montoya said, according to US ABC News.

“There was a huge presence because we had two groups with opposing views and we know that it can always get very tense and there is always potential for violence,” he said.

Denver police subsequently said in a statement that “further investigations have revealed that the suspect is a private security guard with no affiliation with Antifa.”

A journalist from the Denver Post, who claimed to have witnessed the incident, said a man connected to a “Patriot Rally” sprayed a mace in the face of one of the left protesters, who then shot him dead.

The Denver Post updated his story after “authorities questioned the accuracy of this journalist’s report on the shooter’s affiliation,” the editor’s note read.

9Nachrichten Denver identified the two detainees as one of their producers and a private security guard hired by the station.

The producer was “released after DPD found that he was not involved in the incident,” said the broadcaster.
