During the ruling Labor Party’s 75th anniversary celebrations in the capital Pyongyang last night, Kim unveiled the Hwasong-16 ballistic missile, which was carried on an equally large 11-axis launcher.
Xu Tianran, an analyst for Open Nuclear Network, told Sun Online the missile was larger than the DPRK’s previous ICBMs.
He said, “If this project is carried out, it would further increase the level of threat to the US.
“It sends a strong political signal, however, and reflects the leadership’s preference for an even bigger weapon.
“It could probably reach the entire US with one very large, high-yielding nuclear warhead or two or more warheads if the warheads are smaller and lighter.”
According to North Korean analysts 38 North, the gun was much larger than any other it has made in the past, including the smaller Hwasong-15, which was believed to be able to reach the west coast of America.
It said: “The new missile has been correctly characterized as the world’s largest mobile ICBM.
“But why would the North Korean need or want such a large missile?
“An unexpected ‘super-heavy’ ICBM would be… a statement about North Korea’s technical capabilities, the robustness of its ability to threaten the US, and the persistence of its nuclear weapons status.
“Another reason for a larger payload capacity is the desire to carry more RV-style decoys to counterfeit US missile defense.”

It is believed to be able to carry multiple warheads and have a yield of more than 2,000 megatons that could destroy any city in seconds.
But the fact that it is mobile would make it nearly impossible to destroy before launch.
Markus Garlauskas, a former US intelligence officer for North Korea, told Reuters the missile would dispel any remaining doubts that Pyongyang could hit the US.
He said, “If the Hwasong-15 could carry a ‘super-large’ nuclear warhead anywhere in the US, then the natural question is what this larger missile can carry.”
Bruce Klingner, a retired CIA North Korea analyst at the Heritage Foundation, said: “The clear message was that contrary to US claims, the North Korean nuclear threat has not been resolved.”
Michael Elleman, Director of Non-Proliferation and Nuclear Policy at the International Institute for Strategic Studies, estimated that the new large missile could potentially deliver 2,000 to 3,500 kg “to any point on CONUS (US territory),” making it more powerful than Soviet missiles.

In a speech, Kim said, “We will continue to build our national defense power and self-defense war deterrent.
“I am ashamed that I have never really been able to repay you for your tremendous trust.
“My efforts and my dedication were not enough to get our people out of difficult livelihoods.”
A new ballistic missile (SLBM) launched from the submarine was also on display.
Kim said the missiles were not aimed at any particular country.
But he added, “If any force harms the security of our nation, we will fully mobilize the strongest offensive force preventively to punish them.”
