Iranian President Hassan Rouhani expressed, on Tuesday evening, his concern about the ongoing conflict between the Republic Azerbaijan Armenia is on the Nagorno-Karabakh region.
The Iranian Presidency website stated that “Rouhani informed the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev, during a telephone conversation, of his country’s concern about the continuing conflict in the Nagorno-Karabakh region.”
Rouhani said: “Peace and security of the region and ending the military battles are very important to us, and Iran is ready to take any measure to resolve the conflict in Karabakh in accordance with international law and the recognized borders between the two countries.”
Rouhani added, “Iran is concerned about the interference of some countries in the conflict and stresses the need to maintain security on its borders,” noting that “the conflict and continued insecurity at the borders should not pave the way for the entry of some terrorist groups.
Russian-Iranian concern
In the same context, the Russian Foreign Ministry said that Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and his Iranian counterpart, Muhammad Javad Zarif, have expressed their concern about the possible involvement of Syrian and Libyan fighters in the conflict around Nagorno Karabakh.
The ministry added that the two ministers also expressed, during their second phone call since Friday, their “deep concern about the unprecedented escalation in the Nagorno Karabakh conflict.”
For his part, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev assured Rouhani by saying: “It is safe Iran From the security of Azerbaijan and we will not allow this conflict to lead to insecurity in neighboring countries.
Ilham Aliyev described the relationship with Iran as a strategic position for his country, adding: “Bilateral relations have always been expanding in recent years, and Baku welcomes the development of these relations.”
Ilham Aliyev pointed out that combating terrorism in the region is one of the areas of cooperation between Tehran and Baku, pointing out that “preserving peace, stability and tranquility in the region is essential, and we must all work to achieve it.”
