Today, Wednesday, the United States imposed sanctions on the governor of the Central Bank of Syria, Hazem Garfoul, and 18 people and other institutions, including freezing any US assets belonging to those covered by sanctions and preventing any financial transactions with them in the United States.
Among the people whose names the Treasury has listed are Muhammad Luqa, head of the General Intelligence Directorate, and businessman Khader Taher. As for the institutions, they included the Syrian Ministry of Tourism and telecommunications companies owned by persons subject to US sanctions.

The United States accused Taher of being a major supplier to the Fourth Division in the Syrian army, including through the establishment of a private security company that became the “unofficial executive arm” of the division.

The US Treasury Department said that Taher also created the Emma Tel communications company as a rival to the businessman and cousin of Syrian President Rami Makhlouf.
