In the aftermath of the deadly coronavirus that killed at least 26 in China, authorities expanded a travel lockdown in Wuhan, central China, where the outbreak began.
The lockdown was implemented on Thursday in Wuhan, to stop the virus from spreading which has infected over 800 people in China and at least six other countries, reported New York Times.
Just hours before the lockdown, two Filipinos recounted how they hurried to escape from Wuhan and drove out of the city. Bhie and Cindy, who were in Wuhan when they learnt about the lockdown which meant all airports, trains, buses and other modes of transportation will be closed, making it impossible for them to fly back to the Philippines.
"This midnight, we received a message from a friend that was in Chinese. It says that the government will implement a lockdown at 10 in the morning," Bhie was quoted as saying in GMA News Online. The duo booked a car and drove out of Wuhan just hours before the lockdown came into effect.
"We're feeling like a bit safe now cause we have left the city. It was really chaos. It was like an apocalypse. We actually thought we're never gonna get out of Wuhan this morning," Bhie added.
The pair revealed they will temporarily stay in Hong Kong before flying back to Manila. They added that they are open to being medically examined, and quarantined if needed, once they are back in the country.
While the pair chose to escape out of Wuhan, a professor with the University of the Philippines stayed back to prevent spreading the virus. "Because I'm coming from Wuhan, I don't want to be the carrier of anything. As far as I know, I don't have the virus with me," professor Robert Go said.
The Philippine Embassy in Beijing stated that there are only four registered Filipinos in the area, and added that no Filipino in Wuhan was infected with the coronavirus.
