Aden - Yasmin Abdel Azim - Hyderabad: While the YSR Congress party government was considering further tightening the laws to deal with crime against women, it has turned out that the ruling party of Andhra Pradesh has the third highest number of law makers charged with crime against women. Number one and number two in the list were the BJP and the Congress at the national level, according to the list prepared by Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR).

Chief Minister YS Jaganmohan Reddy has said that his government will ensure expeditious process in the cases of crime against women by setting up fast track courts in all the districts.

His remarks came in the backdrop of horror crime in Hyderabad in which a lady veterinary doctor was abducted, gang raped and killed. Ten days after the crime, the four accused were killed in an encounter with police at Shadnagar in outskirts of Hyderabad.

Reddy praised his Telangana counterpart K Chandrasekhar Rao for the way the state government dealt with the incident. “Hats off to KCR garu and Telangana police officials. I am saying this from the floor of assembly,” said Reddy.

He was apparently extending his support to the police in the face of allegations that the four accused were killed in a fake encounter and it was a cold-blooded murder.

Reddy was also critical of the National Human Rights Commission for its action of proving the encounter by immediately rushing its officials to Hyderabad and questioning the police officials involved in the encounter.

“I felt very agonised [by the incident of gang rape and murder] and thought as to how our police and government should respond if such an incident happens in our state. I am also father of two daughters. If anything happens to them as a father how shall I respond and what kind of punishment to the perpetrators will bring me relief?”

He said that in such cases the trial should be completed within 21 days and the guilty should be punished.

But on the other hand the report of ADR pointed out that Reddy’s party, YSRCP, had three MPs and four MLAs with cases of crimes against women.

One opposition TDP MLA was also in the rock in the same manner. In Telangana, ruling TRS also had four MLAs in the same category, including senior minister T Harish Rao.

ADR prepared the list on the basis of affidavits filed by the elected representatives at the time of elections.

ADR found fault with the political parties for giving tickets to those charged with crime against women and asked the voters not to elect such people.
