With the coronavirus pandemic continuing to impact the movie industry, most superhero films have been pushed back for now – but there are plenty of releases to look forward to when things finally get going again.

And one of the somewhat more to be expected superhero films on the left is Morbius, in which Sony returns to its shared Spider-Man spin-off universe after Venom’s promising box office performance in 2018.

The film marks a return to the superhero tariff for Jared Leto and swaps DC’s The Joker for the Marvel antihero of the same name, who has vampiric tendencies and superhuman abilities.

Previous reports have featured how the ever-dedicated Leto Joker was supposed to instill a level of “intensity, charisma, and devotion” – read on to find out everything you need to know.

When will Morbius be in the cinemas?

Morbius had originally scheduled its release on July 31, 2020 in both the UK and the US, but it was one of many films delayed as a direct result of the coronavirus pandemic.

The film is currently expected to hit theaters on March 19, 2021 – although it is possible that this will be pushed back depending on the latest COVID developments.

The film was shot in England at the end of February 2019. Leto marked the start of production with a week 1 Twitter post:

His co-star Matt Smith was also spotted on the set in Manchester while filming.

Production then moved to Atlanta – the location of many Marvel films – and ended in May 2019.

Who is in the cast of Morbius?

Jared Leto (known for his Oscar-winning performance at the Dallas Buyers Club and fronting Thirty Seconds to Mars) plays the title Morbius, created in 1971 by Roy Thomas and Gil Kane as Morbius the Living Vampire.

Under the name Michael Morbius, the Nobel Prize-winning biochemist tried to cure his own blood disease, but turned into a pseudovampire with superhuman abilities. He started out as a villain in the comics before turning into more of an antihero.

Morbius isn’t Leto’s first foray into superhero films – his much-vaunted Joker appeared on Suicide Squad in 2016, but despite its commercial success, the film received negative reviews and Leto is unlikely to return for the sequel (Joaquin Phoenix has provided Warner Bros. ‘next the Take on the role in the award-winning Joker).

Matt Smith accompanies him in Morbius and plays Loxias Crown – the villain’s villain and Morbius’ best friend, who suffers from the same blood disease. Smith previously said he was persuaded to make a superhero movie by former Doctor Who co-star Karen Gillan, who plays Nebula in Guardians of the Galaxy and Avengers: “She told me she really liked it, to make these films. That was enough for me. ”

Also included are The Crown’s Jared Harris, Morbius’ mentor, Adria Arjona (True Detective) as the movie’s main love interest, and Tyrese Gibson (Fast & Furious) as the FBI agent trying to hunt down the living vampire.

Fans had speculated that Jared Harris might also be the legendary Spider-Man villain Doc Ock, aka Doctor Octopus, aka Dr. Otto Octavius, but he firmly denied the claims. When Variety asked Harris if his character could be the villain too, the Chernobyl actor replied, “No. I love the imagination of the fans. It’s exciting for me to think about the fan imagination. But yes no it is not. ”

And in a surprising move, it was confirmed that Michael Keaton will appear in the film after appearing in the teaser trailer – will he play a character we met before?

Is there a trailer for Morbius?

Yes! Sony has now released a teaser trailer in which fans put their fangs in …

What is the plot of Morbius? Will Tom Holland’s Spider-Man Appear?

Details of the film’s exact plot are being kept under wraps for now, but – based on Venom’s 2018 format – we expect it to be some sort of origin story for the title character.

Based on the trailer, it looks like we’re going to see yet another very dark, somber version of the superhero genre. In the trailer we see a doctor, Michael Morbius (Leto), who is trying to deal with a rare blood disease. He’s even experimenting with bat DNA to heal himself, which makes him his vampire-like super. Villain form.

Perhaps the most interesting aspect of the trailer is the appearance of Michael Keaton – many fans speculate that he is sure to play Vulture, the same supervillain he featured in the MCU movie Spiderman: Homecoming.

Although Venom and Morbius appear in the comics with Spider-Man, they exist in a shared cinematic universe that Sony created to sit on separately from that in the Marvel films (owned by Disney) in which Tom Holland’s current version of Spidey exists. A deal between the two studios previously allowed Spider-Man – a Sony character – to enter the MCU, and that’s where he’ll stay for the meantime.

Sony has been working hard on its superhero stable with Morbius in the making, a sequel to Venom in the works and developing other films Silver & Black and Nightwatch.

Currently, however, neither Tom Holland nor his Spider-Man character will appear in Morbius or Venom. Sony shows the superhero only in animated form and in 2018 releases the Oscar-winning Spider-Man: Into the Spiderverse (and with a few sequels and spin-offs on the cards).
