To celebrate Halloween, Roald Dahl’s classic children’s horror story The Witches has returned to stun a whole new generation.

Anjelica Huston starred in the first adaptation, released in 1990, which many adults still look back on as one of the scariest films of their formative years.

Now legendary director Robert Zemeckis (Back to the Future) has reinterpreted the story in which a young boy and his grandmother are desperately trying to stop an evil witch’s plans.

Oscar winners Anne Hathaway and Octavia Spencer lead the cast, which includes the always charming Stanley Tucci and the promising newcomer Jahzir Kadeem Bruno.

Originally intended for a theatrical release, the pandemic has changed the distribution strategy so The Witches can now be viewed from the comfort of your home – right on time for the scariest night of the year.

Read on for everything you need to know about 2020 remake The Witches.

The date of the witches’ appearance

The witches were made available as a 48-hour loan from Monday October 26th for £ 15.99 on Premium Video on Demand (PVOD) platforms including Amazon, iTunes and the Google Play Store.

The family film was originally slated for a theatrical release, but that idea has since been ditched after the spread of COVID-19.

Instead, Warner Bros released the film through its streaming service HBO Max in the US, while British viewers can rent the film through video-on-demand platforms.

What is Premium Video On Demand?

Premium Video On Demand (PVOD) is a relatively new concept introduced in response to the coronavirus pandemic that enables studios to release films that were originally intended for theaters.

Instead of a theatrical release, these titles are released online at a higher than usual price, often on the order of £ 20 for a purchase or rental, in the hopes that they can recover significant production costs.

Films released under this model to date have included Disney’s live-action remake Mulan, as well as Trolls: World Tour and Scoob for Families.

Most of these films are exclusive to PVOD for several weeks but will eventually be available at a lower cost if the studio deems it appropriate.

How to See the Witches (2020) in the UK

The film is available on a number of platforms in the UK at a price of £ 15.99.

This includes the Sky Store, which allows users to purchase movies to rent without the need for a subscription. All you have to do is go to the website and click “Borrow”. You will then have 30 days to view your movie and an additional 48 hours to complete.

There are several compatible devices including a Sky Box, a PC or Mac, Android or iOS that use the Sky Store app, NOW TV and Roku or an LG Smart TV.

Other platforms that offer the film are Prime Video, iTunes, and Microsoft Store. Prime and iTunes also offer the ability to watch 4K UHD at no additional cost.

Is the Witches (2020) on Netflix?

At least not for the time being. The film is currently only being released on Premium Video On Demand, with no telling whether it might appear on Netflix at any time in the future.

There won’t be a shortage of Roald Dahl content on the Streamer for long – the platform plans to adapt a number of the author’s works in the coming years, including new animated versions of Charlie, the Chocolate Factory, and Matilda.

Occupy the witches

Oscar-winning Les Misérables star Anne Hathaway plays the Grand High Witch and is accompanied by Octavia Spencer of The Shape of Water as the grandmother of Bruno, one of the boys who fought the witches.

Comedian Chris Rock (Fargo) acts as the narrator, while Stanley Tucci (The Devil Wears Prada) acts as the manager of the posh hotel where the witches work out their evil plan.

The role of Bruno is played by relative newcomer Jahzir Kadeem Bruno, whom some TV fans may recognize by his role in the Donald Glover sitcom Atlanta, in which he played Omari.

The film also has an outstanding creative team, with Zemeckis in the director’s chair and Oscar-winning Guillermo del Toro and Alfonso Cuarón as executive producers.

The witch shop

The Witches is both a remake of the 1990 film starring Anjelica Huston and a new adaptation of Roald Dahl’s dark 1983 children’s book of the same name.

The story is about a seven-year-old boy, Bruno, who, in a fancy hotel, faces a group of witches who have an evil plan to turn children into mice before they are exterminated.

Together with two other children and his grandmother, Bruno struggles to thwart their terrible plan – but that won’t be easy after he turns into a rodent through a magic potion.

While the 1990 film was a loosely adaptation – disliked by Dahl because the ending was different from the book – this new concept is expected to be more ingrained in the original source material.
