The big backlash against Chris Pratt explains

Guardian of the Galaxy Star Chris Pratt has been trending on Twitter for a few days after TV writer Amy Berg tweeted this:

It was nothing more than a lighthearted joke, but the results of the “poll” sparked a meme – of the four famous Chrises, Pratt has become known as “the worst Chris”, which led to a mild rejection.

The backlash inspired several of Pratt’s MCU co-stars to speak up in his defense, which sparked further criticism as none of them (with the exception of Don Cheadle) spoke out against Brie Larson’s backlash, which was significantly more malicious.

Why is Pratt suddenly so unpopular?

Pratt enjoyed great popularity for a long time after his appearance Parks and recreation and Guardian of the Galaxy, despite his disgusting person on the screen. But a backlash began to brew after Ellen Page Pratt called for support for a religious organization (Hillsong Church) that reportedly discriminates against the LGBT community.

Faith-based bigotry isn’t exactly uncommon, but to be fair to Pratt, the man has never publicly voiced a hateful opinion, claiming that his church is an accepting environment that does not discriminate. At least … not against him.

A 2015 contribution by Brian Houston, senior pastor of Hillsong, clarified the position of the Church. In this post, Houston explains that the Church “welcomes ALL people,” but does not “approve all styles of life,” including the “gay lifestyle.”

So it sounds like they’re against LGBT.

Many members of the public have chosen to interpret Pratt’s beliefs as a worldview intertwined with Trumpism, for which, in turn, Pratt has never publicly expressed his support. The fact that Pratt recently failed to participate in a virtual fundraiser for Joe Biden that his colleague attended avenger Stars reinforced that assumption. But Pratt wasn’t the only missing Avenger – both Robert Downey Jr. and Brie Larson were absent as well, and nobody seemed to care.

For the sake of clarity, this is all speculation; It appears that Pratt belongs to a socially regressive religious group, but has never expressed support for belief-based discrimination or for Donald Trump.

Is that it?

In addition, Pratt has been demonized for giving away his cat.

After becoming a dad, Pratt didn’t think keeping his older, incontinent cat in the same house as a baby was a good idea, and passed the cat on to a stranger he’d found on Twitter.

Seems fair enough to me, but online animal lovers can be a pretty aggressive group and have never forgiven Pratt for his transgression.

That was it. Therefore Chris Pratt is canceled.

Is any of this important?

No Not even a little – it’s just internet gossip. Nobody will skip the next Guardian of the Galaxy because Pratt is a suspected Trump supporter. He’s just “the worst Chris”.

But to be fair, I think most of the Chrises could fall a little short compared to Chris Evans and Chris Hemsworth.
