The Boys’ showrunner Eric Kripke recently announced that he is a fan of Marvel’s films, but believes they are inherently dangerous to society when it comes to portraying superheroes.

He also discussed some of the social comments surrounding The Boys; especially how it relates to the current political climate in our country.

During an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Kripke spoke briefly about the origins of superhero comics, saying that the era in which they were made “doesn’t count as cleanly today.”

He believes early characters like Superman had “undeniable fascist foundations,” whose resemblance was an inspiration for The Boys’ psychotic antagonist Homelander.

When asked for his thoughts on Marvel and DC films, he replied, “People may be surprised to know, but I’m actually a fan of the Marvel material. Filmmaking is often flawless. I enjoy the humorous tone a Many of them are written. They’re snarky and fast and glib and I like that style. ”

Despite the lightheartedness of the films, he believes that there is a much deeper problem, that people are missing.

“My problem with them is not the films themselves, but that there are too many of them overall,” explained Kripke. “I kind of think it’s dangerous not to overdo it or be overdramatic, but it’s a little dangerous to train a generation to wait for someone strong to come in and save you.”

And that’s especially the case in the world we live in today.

“So I think how you end up with people like and populists saying, ‘I’m the only one who can come in, I’ll be,'” said Kripke. “And I think the way pop culture subtly conditions people, I think it conditions them in the wrong direction – because there is just too much of it. So I think it’s nice to have a correction, at least a small one in us you say, ‘They are not coming to save you. Keep your family together and save yourself. ‘ ”

Even if he doesn’t believe in the MCU news and other superhero films, he has no problem mocking the films. In fact, one of the moments in season two was directly inspired by a key moment in Avengers Endgame. The all-female superhero team during the last clash found Kripke “ridiculous” and led to Stormfront and Starlights parodying “Girls get it done!”

When asked, Kripke said, “A lot of that came from our executive producer Rebecca Sonneshine, who came in after the endgame opened over the weekend. She was just angry. I saw it too and thought, ‘That was the dumbest, most made-up – “And she says,” Don’t let me start. “She found it condescending and I agreed. ”

“So that just gave us a goal, a satirical goal. If there is anything really ridiculous in superhero, celebrity, or Hollywood culture, we will immediately strive for it. It’s an easy shot, ”he remarked.

Season three of The Boys is slated to begin filming in 2021 and has added Supernatural’s Jensen Ackles to take on the role of Soldier Boy, one of the earliest superheroes to be injected with Compound V during World War II. He and the story of his Payback team are likely to play a significant role if the title of the first episode is any clue.
