Calm Cannes; HBO Max gets busy; Covid Chaos –...

Hello Jake Kanter here and welcome to the latest edition of International Insider. This week, we’re reflecting on Mipcom’s lean range and examining the issues of manufacturing in a pandemic. Keep scrolling for news and analysis.

A quiet Cannes

Modest mip: And so we have reached the end of what is perhaps the strangest Mipcom market ever. There is no doubt that the coronavirus has ruined the buzz for this year’s Cannes meeting, despite the best efforts of organizer Reed Midem to capture the spirit of the market online. While there were some impressive speakers (particular nod to a news-filled Q&A with Netflix’s Ted Sarandos) and some clever ways to interact via the Mipcom Online + platform, it was clear that nothing could beat the heat and the light of one reproduce physical event.

Slow news week: One way to measure Mipcom’s success is by the strength of the news and gossip coming from the market. This year’s event emitted a low-level buzz of medium to low-ranking deal news without the word of mouth about ambitious new shows emerging from nowhere to become market definers. Unsurprisingly, it was a high-end drama that led the prosecution. Flashy agreements, including Sony, came across the remake rights for Italian series Docand Nordic Entertainment Group announce an Anna Friel series.

Mipcom becomes fragmented: The pandemic has forced the studios to change the way they do business, which inevitably accelerated Mipcom’s development. I’ve spoken to 10 sales heads in front of the market and most of them said that video calling technology means they can meet buyers more regularly than ever as closing deals becomes an increasingly year-round affair. The studios are also launching their own content showcases, skipping the middleman. All of this is a breeze with the Mipcom model.

But, but, but: Mip will be back. Mip TV may be early, but all eyes are on Mipcom 2021 for a big reunion. It will be different and the studios will be far less dependent on the market to generate sales, but optimists see it as a pivotal moment to renew old bonds, open new doors, and bring some collective warmth back into the market.

HBO up to max

Material for adults

Material for adults

Aggressive acquisitions by HBO Max: If there was one theme that came out of Mipcom this year, it was the rise of HBO Max as a real force in the international market. The WarnerMedia streamer had spent several busy days sucking up some big shows that previously had no US home. Here’s the latest buying spree:
  • Material for adults: Channel 4 series about a pornstar mom starring Hayley Squires (picture)
  • I hate suzie: Sky Phone Hack Drama aus Succession Lucy Prebble and actress Billie Piper
  • Possession: Studiocanals French / Israeli series in which a bride is accused of murdering her husband
  • Valley of tears: Israel’s cheapest television series ever to show the 1973 Yom Kippur War
  • The bridge: Banijay / Channel 4 Reality Show in which participants build a bridge to an island

This was predicted: Jeniffer Kim, the head of the international original from HBO Max, pointed out further “co-productions, pre-sales and originally commissioned content” in the world market in an August interview with Edinburgh White of Deadline. She definitely did her word well.

Why it matters: The race for international content has become even more intense. This is great news if you are looking for a US partner as a producer. And it might just be the beginning for HBO Max, which plans to keep stepping on Netflix as it begins its global expansion, beginning with Latin America next year. Hulu’s former international chief Johannes Larcher is leading the international prosecution.

Covid chaos continues

Britain's Got Talent

Britain's Got Talent

No respect: As the UK is flooded by a second wave of coronavirus, problems for producers mount. The deadline announced this week that Syco Entertainment and Fremantle have closed the company Britain’s Got Talent (Image) Christmas special after three crew members tested positive while a similar outbreak occurred on BBC One Little Mix The Search forced the singing contest series out of the air this weekend. The virus’ lack of respect for even the strictest security protocols shows that manufacturers always need a Plan B or – in the worst case – are prepared to cancel. So it’s good news that the UK government’s insurance system is finally open for business.

And it’s not just breakouts on set: Covid straightens its ugly head before the cameras roll. We announced this week that Apple has stopped pre-production of See-Saw Films. The Essex snake after Keira Knightley dramatically left the lead role and citing childcare concerns amid the pandemic. The show won’t go into production until next year – presumably with a new leading actress.

Carry on anyway: The UK government’s regional lockdown hasn’t stopped filming of Warner Bros’. The Batman in Liverpool, one of the worst hit areas in the country. Robert Pattinson was caught on the set after overcoming his own battle with the coronavirus. The Batman The filming could give hope that other filming can continue even if there is another lockdown across the UK.

NBCU Bomb

Jeff Quail

Jeff Quail

Quail out: My editor, Nellie Andreeva, released the news of Jeff Wachtel’s abrupt departure as president of NBCUniversal International Studios on Friday. The 20-year-old NBCU vet was fired after internal complaints about his management style, despite the company knowing exactly what happened.

The context: NBC and its subsidiaries are undergoing a major cultural cleansing. An internal investigation follows into allegations of professional misconduct against former NBC entertainment president Paul Telegdy. Meredith Ahr, president of NBC Entertainment’s Alternative and Reality Group, was another sudden exit earlier this week.

Why it matters: London-based Wachtel oversaw a global empire that includes: Downton Abbey Carnival Films Producer, Hanna Producer Working Title and Matchbox Pictures, the Australian indie behind Netflix’s Cate Blanchett refugee drama Stateless. NBCU insiders say the search for quail replacements will begin soon. As an industry source put it, “It’s good that they are really trying to change the culture. It was foreseeable for a long time. ”

London is calling

Ava DuVernay

Ava DuVernay

The overview of LFF: The BFI London Film Festival this week was mainly digital, as is currently the case. Big names in the industry gathered on Zoom to discuss the future of business. Deadline participated in a conversation with Ava DuVernay, who used the platform to describe the film industry as “mediocre”. There were also meetings with TV supremo Jane Tranter, who discussed it A discovery of the witches Due to a positive Covid test, the shooting has to be interrupted and how Bad Wolf dealt with the pandemic. Elsewhere, producer Ted Hope lived up to its name and provided a rare positive voice during these troubled pandemic times. He said a coronavirus disruption and rulings could mean that we are “close to the best time we’ve ever had for filmmakers in my 35 years.”

The pursuit of love

The pursuit of love

Got more than they expected:: The pursuit of love was one of the liveliest shows shown at Mipcom. Producers gave buyers a taste of a shiny star-studded series that undermines the historical drama genre with the enthusiasm of Sofia Coppola Marie Antoinette. What the BBC and Amazon failed to negotiate, however, was a dramatic subplot that came about the same week that the show was windowed. British tabloids buzzed with excitement after getting snaps of The pursuit of love Stars Lily James and Dominic West seem to be caught up in a sunny tryst on the streets of Rome. Then, just a day later, the subplot thickened when West came out of his house with his wife and told the waiting press that “our marriage is strong.” It is believed that all is pretty good for the drama commercial pursuit when the premiere is rolling around.
