A post reveals new U2 stamps

Once again, An Post proved that philately gets you literally everywhere by introducing four new postage stamps celebrating the evolution of U2 over the past four decades.

Entitled U2 – A celebration 1976-2020The set of four stamps represents different eras of U2 in four of the band’s albums, 1987 Der Joshua Tree1991 Watch out baby2000s Everything you can’t leave behind and 2017 Songs of experience.

A booklet of four stamps priced at € 5.40 contains two N postage stamps for standard mail in the island of Ireland and two W postage stamps for mail worldwide.

For fans of U2 and Irish design, An Post also releases a number of purpose-built stamp collectibles, including a day one envelope with an early Colm Henry photo of a young U2 performing at the Dublin dandelion market in the late 1970s.

The new edition also includes a souvenir sheet with a special edition U2 360 ° Tour Panorama stamp, shown in a wider image (by Ralph Larmann) of the stage for the tour at Wembley Stadium in London.

Capturing the career of one of the world’s most successful and enduring rock bands on the tiny canvas of a postage stamp required expert design.

With contributions from the band, An Post worked with U2’s creative director Gavin Friday and graphic designer Shaughn McGrath to come up with four concepts inspired by the band’s extensive album catalog.

“In a year of so many constraints, it’s fun to believe that thanks to An Post we can travel from our homes in Ireland to anywhere in the world,” said U2 bassist Adam Clayton.

Shaughn McGrath said, “The stamps feel like a highlight of my work for U2. Every album has an icon that represents its ideas and concepts. In addition, each stamp has its own individual shape and together they work as a collective silhouette and a unique visual signature. ”

U2 was also featured on An Post stamp last year as part of a First Day cover celebrating the Irish songs Danny Boy by John McCormack, On Raglan Road by Luke Kelly, dreams from The Cranberries and With you or without you from U2.

The band also featured on an Irish postage stamp in 2002, based on a 2000 promotional photo taken by noted rock photographer Kevin Westenberg.

Phil Lynott, Rory Gallagher and Van Morrison also featured on the 2002 postage stamps.
